Question marks persist over Randell Williams' future with Bolton Wanderers
RANDELL Williams’s future at Wanderers remains up in their air despite the departure of manager Ian Evatt.
The wing-back has not been selected in the last two squads at Bolton and raised eyebrows with a social media tweet last week which seemed to indicate that he was leaving.
When asked, Evatt said there were no plans to move on the former Hull City man, who has played 22 times so far this season.
But after bringing in Alex Murphy from Newcastle United on loan, Evatt admitted that Williams’ chances of first team football could decrease.
Asked if there had been a change of heart on the 28-year-old moving elsewhere in the January window, he said on Tuesday night: “Possibly.
“It's really important that my dialogue and communication is with Randall.
“At the moment, we've got Alex (Murphy) in, we've got Jordi (Osei-Tutu) that can do that role, we've got Szabi (Schon) who's playing really well.
“Randell is out of contract in the summer, so we're always looking to evolve and develop the squad, and we'll see what happens for the rest of the winter.”
It now remains to be seen whether Evatt’s exit means a stay of execution for Williams, or whether the club will persist with the transfer strategy they had in place and will create another spot for the new boss to bring in his own man.
Work had been done on a deal to sign Norway Under-21 international Jonas Therkelsen but that is unlikely to progress until there is a new person in the hotseat.
Wanderers have several players out of contract in the summer and one of them, vice captain Gethin Jones, has reportedly been offered options to play his football in Australia next season.
The defender has already won six caps for the Socceroos and was born in Perth.
Nathan Baxter is another of the first team players whose deal expires in the summer, and the former Chelsea man has recently lost his place in the side to Luke Southwood.
Evatt had said he intended to alternate between his two goalkeeping options.
“We've got two really good goalkeepers,” he said after the defeat to Charlton. “I still believe in Nathan, there's no denying that. But for this game, we felt that having the goalkeeper as a spare player was vitally important and Luke's distribution could help us.”
The goalkeeping situation has been further complicated with the fact specialist coach Matt Gilks has also now left the club.
