IAN Evatt insisted there “wasn’t a lot wrong” with Wanderers’ performance in defeat against Mansfield Town.

The Bolton boss was frustrated by two defensive mistakes that led to first-half goals for Stephen McLaughlin and Stephen Quinn but felt his team had enough territorial pressure to have taken something more from the game at Field Mill.

Aaron Collins did give them hope with a goal just before half time but Wanderers mustered just one shot on target in the second half despite getting into some promising positions around the Stags’ penalty box.

Evatt said: “It was two lapses in concentration, we completely dominated the game, it was one of the most one-sided games you’ll see but you switch off from a throw in, they score, then we switched off from a transition, and they score, and we give ourselves a mountain to climb.

“We should still have climbed it, we had so much possession, so much territory, so much dominance, but our last bit – the cross, finish, decision, was wrong.

“In terms of the general performance there wasn’t a lot wrong with it, other than the two moments, but we have to be better and more clinical in the final third. The one time we were, we scored.”

Mansfield keeper Christy Pym made just two saves over 90 minutes, one in the first half from Collins and the second a deflection from close range off Dion Charles.

Evatt said his side’s decision-making around the penalty box had cost them a chance to get back into the match.

He said: “In terms of an away performance it’s as dominant as you’ll see because this is a tough place to come. But we have to make that dominance count and that is with the final third detail and finishing. We just make the wrong decision too often, when we are in good crossing positions we over-hit the cross, we don’t find the right pass, when we are in positions to shoot, we pass, when we are in positions to pass, we shoot. And because of the two goals we conceded we became a bit panicky and that caused us to make erratic decisions.

“For the rest of the game it was complete dominance, it is so frustrating.

“That wasn’t a bad performance and anyone that was here can’t say it was. It was controlled, dominant, we got to the final third so comfortably but that’s also where we let ourselves down.”
