Arsenal are reportedly having doubts about a potential summer move for Wolves start Matheus Cunha, following his red card against Bournemouth.

The Brazilian has been a key player for Wolves so far this season, and will be key if they are to be successful in their battle against relegation at the end of the campaign. Arsenal are one of the teams credited with an interest in the player ahead of the summer transfer window.

Cunha was linked with a move away from Molineux in January, with Arsenal again linked, but he instead stayed with the club, putting pen-to-paper on a new deal. It has now however emerged that the contract includes a reported release clause of £62.5 million.

The 25-year-old was in FA Cup action for Wolves over the weekend as they took on fellow Premier League side Bournemouth in the fifth round. He scored a stunning equalising goal, but then was shown a straight red card during extra time for violent conduct against Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez.

Replays showed the player appear to aim a hit, a kick and a headbutt at the defender in an off the ball incident. Having previously been sent off this season, following a clash with a member of Ipswich’s backroom staff, his suspension will be at least four games.

According to talkSPORT , the red card against Bournemouth has led to Mikel Arteta having ‘reservations about Cunha’s character’. It’s something that former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has warned about.

Speaking on Match of the Day on Saturday he said of Cunha: “The ability he has is top-level. The goal he scores today belongs not in the FA Cup, it belongs in the Champions League it’s that good.

“Give him too much space and he does this and that’s Ronaldo-like. That’s top-level, absolutely top-drawer finish.

“Then suddenly, we see the ugly. Kerkez gets involved and then that’s a right, left, kick and a headbutt, it’s the three-card trick really

“I’ve not seen that on a football pitch since the 70s. He just cannot do that. He just lost it completely.

“And worse still, they just could not get him out of the ground. In the end the cameras had to come away. This was the ugly part.

“This is something he has to stop because he has a history of this already. He pulled the glasses off a steward recently so whether it’s going to be three games or more this fella has to play and it’s vital he’s going to be available.

“They [Wolves] need points to stay up and the Ipswich game is massive. They’re five points clear now but that’s a huge loss they need him back on the pitch.”
