Arsenal transfer target Matheus Cunha avoided a longer suspension for his involvement in the unsavoury scenes after Wolves vs Ipswich Town due to two kind reasons, it has been confirmed.

With the January transfer window open for English top-flight clubs, the Gunners enter another business period with noise around them signing a striker.

Mikel Arteta is yet to get his hands on an out-and-out number nine, instead relying upon his wingers and most often Kai Havertz playing centrally to get his side the goals they require.

To that end, it could be better. Bukayo Saka is the team's top contributor with five goals and 10 assists but he is now out injured for the foreseeable, recovering from hamstring surgery.

Meanwhile Havertz, Martinelli, Jesus and Trossard have pitched in with strikes, but not to the extent of recent seasons. After 20 games Arsenal have only 39 goals - 20 of those from set pieces - and are six points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

From that arrives plenty of speculation, particularly focused on Wolves' red-hot striker Cunha. The Brazilian has netted 10 for the strugglers.

However scrutinous eyes trailed upon him recently for his role in the fracas that followed Ipswich's 2-1 win at Molineux on December 14.

Footage showed Cunha snatching the glasses from the face of one of the visiting team's employees and elbowing him in the back of the head amongst the melee. It was later determined that he would serve a two-match ban, being charged with misconduct.

However, it has been revealed the the FA commission that reviewed the incident could have dished out a lengthier sentence of three matches. They chose not to do so as they took into consideration the hand-written apology the player sent to the Ipswich member of staff, along with the offer of paying for new spectacles.

These two factors - partnered with his prior good disciplinary record - resulted in the shorter ban and the 25-year-old's fine being reduced from £120k to £80k.

There have been plenty of clubs who have been left aggrieved with this whole process.

In the time it took to determine the punishment Cunha played three matches - scoring vs Leicester then doing so again alongside an assist against Man United.

He missed Monday's loss to Nottingham Forest and the second match of the suspension will be served in the FA Cup third round tie with Bristol City.

He then returns for a stint of Premier League games against Newcastle United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Liverpool.

Except Arsenal may feel different to the rest of those teams, as they will see Cunha's availability to play as a bonus, were they to make their move this month.
