The FA reduced Matheus Cunha’s ban from three games to two after the Wolverhampton Wanderers forward penned a letter of apology to the Ipswich Town employee and offered to buy him new glasses.

Cunha was retrospectively banned by The FA for his involvement in an altercation during Wolves’ defeat to Ipswich on December 14. The Brazilian was filmed elbowing a member of Ipswich’s backroom staff before pulling his glasses from his face.

Cunha was subsequently charged by The FA, but he was allowed to continue playing up until his hearing on December 30 and scored in wins over Leicester City and Manchester United. With 10 goals and four assists from his 19 league appearances this season, Cunha is undoubtedly Wolves’ talisman.

And his ban isn’t as harsh as first feared after The FA acknowledged Cunha’s ‘early admission of the Charge, his apology and the fact that he had offered to pay for replacement glasses.’

Cunha missed Wolves’ defeat to Nottingham Forest on Monday night and will sit out of their FA Cup tie against Bristol City on Saturday. The 25-year-old will be available for Wolves’ Premier League meeting with Newcastle United on January 15.

Giving his account of the incident at the hearing, Cunha said: “As I tried to get closer to Rayan (Ait-Nouri) to make sure he was okay, I was suddenly surrounded by a lot of people. I felt like I was being shoved by the ITFC security personnel, so I shoved them back in an effort to break away from them to protect myself.

“It was never my intention to come into contact with (Ipswich staff member) and I certainly never meant to elbow him. I simply wanted to push him away from Rayan. Then all of a sudden, I remember (Ipswich staff member) turned round and had his hands on my shirt, and I shouted “stop” but he kept hold of my shirt.

“(Ipswich staff member) is much bigger than me and I was surrounded by a large number of people, mainly ITFC personnel, so I remember feeling quite threatened at the time. So in an effort to get (Ipswich staff member) to let go of my shirt, in the heat of the moment I regrettably reached out and grabbed his glasses. I know it was wrong to do this and I take full responsibility for my actions.”

In addition to his two-game ban, Cunha has been fined £80,000 by The FA.
