Wolverhampton Wanderers announced on Saturday evening that Matheus Cunha had signed a new four-and-a-half-year contract until the summer of 2029.

Manchester United have been credited with an interest in the Brazil international this winter transfer window as contract negotiations dragged on with Wolves. However, the centre-forward committed his long-term future to the club soon after their 2-0 win over Aston Villa.

Cunha, 25, scored the second goal of the gam deep into added time to secure the victory against their West Midlands rivals and made his intentions when celebrating afterwards. The goalscorer blew a kiss to the crowd before pushing both index fingers into his chest and proceeding to make a heart with his hands then pointing down to the Molineux pitch.

Minutes later, when walking off the pitch following the full-time whistle, Cunha made a signing gesture with his hands and put pen to paper a little later. Reflecting on the decision, the player acknowledged to Wolves TV: "Of course, there was a lot of noise around what Matheus would do.

"But we are not in a good situation, and I try my best; if I can do something to help the club, the club then open the doors for me. I want to; if something happens in the future, it will be because I try my best, and then I leave the club in a very good situation."

Cunha continued: "Of course, everyone tries and wants something more for their career and future and everything, but really I feel this is the moment to keep fighting and show everyone what we have and what love I want to give back."

Cunha's new contract reportedly includes a release clause that becomes active at the end of this season if United were to pursue a deal, with their PSR situation likely to be much clearer at the end of the campaign. The Mail claims the price a club would have to pay this summer is £62.5million.
