Can Mathys Tel play in the Champions League for Arsenal after 'encouraging' transfer talks
Bayern Munich winger Mathys Tel could soon be joining Arsenal as the January transfer window heads into its final hours.
According to The Guardian, the Gunners have made an initial approach to Tel's representatives regarding a move before the deadline. It is believed that the 19-year-old would be interested in moving to the red half of north London despite turning down a £50m offer from Tottenham Hotspur earlier this week.
A loan switch seems the most likely option for Tel at present as he wants to keep his options open for the summer. This could also benefit Arsenal too who are looking to sign a centre-forward like RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko at the end of the season.

Manchester United are also thought to be keen on signing Tel in this window as they look to replace Marcus Rashford before Monday ends. However, should he choose Arsenal, the winger would be eligible to play for the Gunners in the knockout stages of the Champions League.
Despite Arsenal submitting their squad for the Champions League at the beginning of the season, clubs are able to add three players to their teams before February 6, according to UEFA's rules. Unlike the FA Cup, where players who play for one side in the competition that season cannot play for another, the Champions League does not cup tie players in the same fashion.
As such, despite Tel having made three appearances for Bayern in the Champions League this season, he could play for Arsenal in the knockouts. The Gunners qualified automatically for the round of 16 on Wednesday night after beating Girona 2-1, they will face either Feyenoord, Juventus, AC Milan or PSV Eindhoven over two legs in the first knockout stage.
