Wycombe Wanderers manager Matt Bloomfield has admitted it would be an ‘upset’ if his side were to eliminate Portsmouth from the FA Cup this evening.

The Chairboys take on the 2008 winners and despite them being four places lower than Pompey in the football pyramid, the two teams are separated by one league.

It will be the first-ever meeting between the two sides at Adams Park, with it being only the second occasion the two sides have met in the world’s oldest footballing knockout competition.

The previous encounter was in the first round of the 2016/17 season, which Wycombe won 2-1 at Fratton Park.

Paris Cowan-Hall scored to put Wanderers ahead before Gareth Evans equalised two minutes after half-time.

Club legend Adebayo Akinefenwa then scored the winner with six minutes left.

Manager Matt Bloomfield played in that match.

Speaking ahead of tonight's clash, he said: “It’s also great to do it on the 50th anniversary [of Wycombe reaching the third round for the first time] and we want to win and progress further.

If we do win it, it would be an upset as Portsmouth are a higher-ranked opposition but we know they come with real strength and very good footballers.

“They have started to adapt in the Championship and have managed to get some really big results at home.

“We know a number of their players both personally and professionally along with their management team.

“We played them twice last season and once in pre-season, and I know Mous [John Mousinho] longer than I care to remember.

“We hope it’s a great night and a proper match between two good teams, and I hope we get on the right side of the result.”

Tonight will also be Wanderers’ 10th fixture in a domestic cup this season.

They had played three in the League Cup, four in the EFL Trophy and three in the FA Cup.

He added: “It’s a blessing and a curse at how well we have done in the cups this season as it has increased our number of games at this point.

“But it’s lovely to be in the third round – it’s something you can’t question as we love being part of this competition.”

The match will kick-off at 7.45pm.
