Matt Peet's Hull FC comment amid victory satisfaction and Jai Field prediction
Matt Peet showed his satisfaction after Wigan Warriors' thumping 46-4 victory at Hull FC on Friday night. The win was Peet's first as head coach at the MKM Stadium, with the 40-year-old tasting defeat in west Hull in each of the 2022, 2023, and 2024 seasons.
However, that unwanted run was firmly put to bed at the fourth time of asking, with Jai Field scoring a hat-trick in an eight-try win. Clinical, Wigan's all-conquering coach put victory down to a strong start, with the Cherry and Whites building into the game and then taking their chances.
The perfect antidote to last week's 1-0 loss to Leigh Leopards, Peet's side are now very much up and running, with the coach airing his assessment post-match. He said, "We're moving through a season; every week is a different game, and you work hard in training, and you pick things that you want to keep about your game and build on and pick things you want to improve, and we'll continue to do that.

"If we'd have won 1-0 last week, it wouldn't have made much difference to what we do. I thought it was a strong performance, and it looked straightforward in retrospect, but coming over here on the back of not just Hull FC's result last week but the event, the enthusiasm around Hull FC doing a lot of good things on and off the field, we knew we were stepping into the challenge of a really proud club that was looking to put on a show for their supporters.
"We managed to get things right at the start of the game, and that stood us in good stead. It was a big challenge coming here tonight, and we handled it really well."
Peet continued, "It's well documented that we haven't got the best record in Hull during my time at the club, and looking at some of those, it was the start that we haven't got right, so that was a priority for us. It's not just about the scoring; it's the way you build into a game, and I thought we did that well. The points didn't come that easily initially, but obviously the game opened up a bit, which is normally the case when you're clinical at the start."
Peet also reserved praise for Field, who showed his dynamic running game with three superb tries, two from chasing kicks and a third a scrum move, taking Harry Smith's inside pass to burst through the Hull line. However, it was the play to chase down Harvey Barron that impressed his coach the most.
"He's a great player," Peet said. "He works so hard on his game, and you expect to see him get better as the season goes on. His game is built on his combination with Harry and Bevan (French), and timing is a big part of that.
"I think you'll always see him improve, and he works so hard at his game. He saved a try with a great tackle as well. I thought it was a good night for Jai."
And as for Hull, Peet believes the club, who were missing several players to injury—including the likes of Zak Hardaker, Amir Bourouh, Jed Cartwright, and Jack Ashworth, not to mention Ligi Sao and Jon Asiata during the game—are heading in the 'right direction.' He added, "It’s a tough place to come so I'm pleased to get away with the win.
"We knew that Hull would come full of spirit. Credit to them. They’re heading in the right direction. We had to weather that storm and do a lot of things well and when we did that we played some decent rugby."
