Matty Cash reveals Steven Gerrard inspiration after ending Aston Villa goal drought
Matty Cash scored his first goal in eight months on Wednesday as part of an emphatic first half which saw Aston Villa take an unassailable lead in their victory over Brentford - and he admitted he had former boss Steven Gerrard in his mind as he wheeled away to celebrate his strike.
Cash netted the third Villa goal in the first half to complement strikes from teammates Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins. The Polish international has always been good for a goal, despite operating at right-back, but he has had to wait a little while since he last had that experience of the ball hitting the back of the net.
It returned on Wednesday, when he popped up at the back post to fire low and beyond Bees goalkeeper Mark Flekken. It was Cash's first goal since the goal away in Lille in the Europa Conference League quarter final back in April of this year and, while he'd also netted against Hibernian in a qualifier for the same competition and in the FA Cup at Middlesbrough, this was his first league goal since Burnley away last season.

He revealed to Match Of The Day after the game that he had spoken with his friend on Wednesday morning and that, should he break his duck, he'd celebrate as his old boss Gerrard once did, when scoring for Liverpool at Manchester United - by giving the camera a peck.
"It's been a while, to be fair," Cash smiled as he reflected to BBC Sport on the part he played in Villa's return to winning ways. "My mate texted me this morning saying I was going to score today. We spoke about a celebration and I said I'd kiss the camera like Gerrard!"
