Max Verstappen makes surprise Liverpool declaration because of Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo
Red Bull driver Max Verstappen has made a surprise Liverpool declaration, insisting that he is happy that Arne Slot's side is leading the way in the Premier League standings — despite being a big Manchester United fan.
The Dutchman has previously attributed his decision to support Manchester United to fellow Dutchman Ruud van Nistelrooy and Robin van Persie as part of the reason for his choice. But now, he is friends with Liverpool duo Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo.
"Virgil keeps inviting me to come to a game and I will definitely do it," he told the Daily Mirror. "I'm not that idiot that hates another club. When I see Virgil play or Cody [Gakpo, who was at PSV], when they do well at Liverpool, that excites me as well. When they're leading in the league, I'm like, ‘Yeah, that's great’. They're having an amazing season. It's cool."
Verstappen finished sixth in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this weekend with Lando Norris taking the victory, ahead of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc but he still leads the driver's championship having won 14 races in 2024. Liverpool leads the way in both the Premier League and the Champions League despite the Merseyside derby having been postponed.
Liverpool.com says: Liverpool has plenty of famous fans with lots of big names spotted in the stands for the game against Real Madrid in the Champions League recently. Soccer legends Michael Laudrup, Roberto Carlos and Emilio Butragueno were all there.
Away from soccer, Rafael Nadal was at Anfield, as well as actors Mike Myers and Damien Lewis, who are both Liverpool fans. Jobe Bellingham was also in attendance to watch his brother, Jude, who was playing for Real Madrid.
