FREE tennis sessions for anyone with mental health issues are coming to Southend this week.

Run Free has offered football coaching for those suffering with their mental health for the past four years.

And the Southend based support group is now branching out into another sport.

Run Free co-founder Chris Phillips explained: “The football group has been brilliant and will continue to be so I’m sure but we’re always looking at ways to improve and reach more people and branching out into tennis is a great way to do that.

“I love tennis and this is something we’ve been trying to sort out for a little while now but it takes time to make sure it’s done properly.

“We’re ready to go now though and we can’t wait to get started.”

The first session will take place this Friday on the indoor courts at Garon Park in Southend and will get underway at 7pm.

Anyone with mental health problems is welcome to attend and no previous playing experience is required.

“It really doesn’t matter how good you are at all,” said Chris.

“It’s purely about getting like minded people together to form a different kind of support group while having fun at the same time.

“Playing sport and getting some exercise is proven to help mental health issues and that’s what we’re all about at Run Free.

“It’s a very friendly group and people can play as much or as little as they like.

“It’s purely down to whatever they’re comfortable with.”

After this Friday’s session, the tennis coaching will be held every fortnight at Garon Park.

And Chris was keen to thank those who have helped to make it happen.

“We must say a huge thank you to the Finish Line Fund for their support which has ensured we don’t need to charge those who are coming down to play,” said Chris.

“Thanks to Garons for agreeing to host us as well, especially Lorraine Wilson who has gone above and beyond to accommodate us.

“It’s really nice that our football and tennis sessions are being held at the same venue.

“We just can’t wait to get started now.”

Run Free have raised close to £70,000 for the mental health charity Mind since being formed and have more fundraising planned for 2025.

The group have also announced tennis star Ryan Peniston as an ambassador for the tennis sessions.
