Micah Richards has delivered his verdict so far on Aston Villa’s big summer signing Amadou Onana.

Midfielder Onana arrived at Villa Park for £50m from Everton in July and made a great start to life at the club. He made an instant impact with three goals in his first five matches, in Premier League wins against West Ham and Leicester City and a Champions League victory over Young Boys.

But his early progress has been hit by injuries and he has only played three times since the start of November, in Premier League defeats to Tottenham, Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

Onana was suggested as one of the best summer signings in the Premier League by Gary Lineker in the latest Rest Is Football podcast, but, shaking his head, Richards responded: “He started well, he scored a few goals. A little bit of steel in the midfield.

“I wouldn’t say he’s been outstanding, he’s been very good hasn’t he? He’s fit in well, coming from Everton, difficult place. He’s fit into the system well.

”I don’t think he’s been amazing.”
