Plymouth Argyle have completed the club record signing of Ghana international midfielder Michael Baidoo from Swedish side IF Elfsborg.

The transfer fee for Baidoo has not been disclosed but it is believed to be well in excess of the £1m the Pilgrims paid twice in the summer of 2023, for Bali Mumba and Morgan Whittaker. The 25-year-old has agreed a long-term deal until the summer of 2028 and will wear the number 30.

His transfer was not completed in time for Baidoo to be part of Argyle's squad for the away Championship match against Stoke City tomorrow lunchtime, so his debut will have to wait until the Emirates FA Cup third round tie away to Premier League club Brentford on Saturday, January 11.

Baidoo flew into the UK before the new year, accompanied by his father, and they watched Argyle's 2-2 draw against Bristol City at Home Park on January 1.

The transfer had already been agreed between Argyle and Elfsborg but it could not be announced until a visa and international clearance had been obtained for Baidoo, a process which was slower than usual due to the Christmas period.

That also meant that Baidoo could not take part in training with his new team-mates, but now those issues have both been tied up and the 25-year-old can begin his Argyle career.

The attacking midfielder has scored five goals and assisted three times for Elfsborg in the UEFA Europa League this season, on top of the 10 goals and four assists he got for them in the Swedish top flight, the Allsvenskan, during the 2024 season, when they finished in seventh position out of 16 teams.

Argyle's head of recruitment Jimmy Dickinson said: “Michael is someone we have been aware of for a long time, and I am delighted that we have finally been able to bring him to Argyle.

“He comes to the club with excellent pedigree having been the star of Elfsborg’s Europa League campaign this season and recently made his international debut for Ghana.

“He can play a variety of positions so will add real versatility to the squad, but most of all chose to come to Argyle ahead of other top clubs throughout Europe.

"He is excited to play in England and show what he can do, and we believe he will make a real impact on English football. I want to thank Simon (Hallett, Argyle's owner and chairman) and the board for helping us bring him to Argyle in a record deal and look forward to seeing him on the pitch very soon.”

The announcement of the transfer of Baidoo came this evening, after a day in which striker Andre Gray left Argyle at the end of his short-term contract while defender Lewis Gibson completed a move to Preston North End for a fee of over £1.5m.
