Michael Baidoo has admitted he did not have to think twice when Plymouth Argyle made their second attempt to bring him to Home Park in a club record transfer.

The 25-year-old came very close to joining the Pilgrims at the end of the summer transfer window but his Swedish side Elfsborg would not sell him because of their involvement in European competition. However, when Argyle renewed their interest in Baidoo last month a deal was agreed between all parties and he completed his move for an undisclosed seven figure fee on January 3, signing a contract until the summer of 2028.

Baidoo has made two starts for his new club so far and both as an out-and-out striker, which has been out of necessity really given the lack of other options up front. Over time, he will likely be used primarily as a midfielder.

The Ghana international became Argyle's club record signing and Baidoo said about that: "One, you have to feel special about it and also you have to think about the demands the people will be expecting from you.

"So for me, one way I could feel the pressure but in the end it's football so if I can show my qualities and help the team, getting three points matters the most. It's a big thing but also brings a lot of responsibilities. I'm ready for it."

Asked how close he came to joining Argyle in the summer, Baidoo said: "So close, so close. I almost came on the deadline day. It was a hard decision to make in the end. Finally I'm here."

He continued: "From my personal experience, I always want to go to a club that I feel very welcome, and what they showed me in the summer I feel like I should be here, and I didn't think twice when they came a few weeks ago.

"I was supposed to be here, and now I'm here. There have been other clubs but they (Argyle) were so desperate for me so I had to accept and be here."

Baidoo's transfer was not finalised in time for him to play in 0-0 Championship draw at Stoke City on January 4 so his first appearance came in the shock 1-0 Emirates FA Cup third round win away to Premier League club Brentford.

"That was a mix of feelings, the challenge was accepted at that moment," he said. "I had to show my qualities and I was happy also to have a debut with the win. It was a good one for me."

On what the Green Army can look forward to seeing from him, Baidoo said: "I try to do my best each and every day so they should expect good performances and also wins because that's what we need right now. Personally, I'm thinking of how to get better as a person and also to help the team as soon as possible. It's a big task and that is the focus right now."

Wayne Rooney was the head coach when Argyle tried to sign Baidoo in the summer. Now it is former Cercle Brugge boss Miron Muslic, who was appointed last Friday.

Muslic watched from the stands when the Pilgrims beat Brentford before taking charge for the first time in the 1-1 draw against Oxford United at Home Park on Tuesday night, when Baidoo led the attack for most of the match before dropping deeper after Michael Obafemi was sent on as a late substitute.

Baidoo said: "The last months I have been playing as a false nine. It's not that big a difference. It's a new manager now so I will have to see what will happen in the next couple of weeks. He knows best, I'm ready to help the team.

"He has worked with a lot of good players so, for me, I have to be humble and keep learning because in the end I will be better and he will be better. I'm looking forward to work more years with him."

On his new team-mates, Baidoo said: "From the very first moment I arrived, it was with open arms. I feel welcome the very first minute. It feels like I have been here a longer time. We are going to have some great times together so I'm looking forward."

Another good early impression for Baidoo has been the support of the Green Army, with nearly 2,500 of them travelling to the FA Cup tie against Brentford before he played at a packed Home Park for the visit of Oxford.

He said: "They showed great support the first game, and at home also you could see the passion they have. It brings a lot of energy to me. They play a big role so in the end I have to give back with a good performance, hard work and win games."
