Michael Carrick on Alex Gilbert's 'special' moment & what comes next after loan call
MICHAEL Carrick has backed Alex Gilbert to use his last minute winner at Hull as a springboard and play a key role in the second half of the season for Middlesbrough.
Gilbert came off the bench to strike in the last minute of stoppage time and secure a much-needed three points for Boro against the lowly Tigers, lifting Carrick's side to fifth in the table.
It's been a frustrating 18 months for Gilbert since his move from Brentford, with the forward struggling for opportunities last season and after a promising start to the current campaign he was ruled out for two months with a knee injury.

But Carrick hailed Gilbert for the way he has dealt with the challenges and was overjoyed for last night's matchwinner.
"I'm so happy for him. You could see everyone was so happy for him," he said.
"It's incredible for Alex and it's a big, big moment for him for everything he's built to get to this stage. To see everyone as happy as they were for him is special.
"He's got that in him, Alex. He probably feels he hasn't played as much as he'd like. He's been really patient but at the same point pushing to be involved. He wants to make an impact. He finished last season well, played some games and had an impact.
"He played the cup games at the start of the season and played some other games but then got his injury, which was a setback. But he's been working back to that. He's been on the pitch at times lately. It wasn't long tonight but it was enough for him and he's shown what he can do.
"I'm not saying he's just going to be an impact player, he's developing. I was delighted for him. So much work goes on, the boys go through so many emotions. It's all worth it when you find a moment like that.
"To see how happy everyone was for him shows the togetherness in the group. We're all fighting the same battle. Only certain lads can start games but it's a privilege to be part of such a strong group and you have to share the load.
"He's at a stage now where he's pushing and there'll be more football for him."
Carrick had previously suggested Gilbert wouldn't be allowed to leave on loan this month, despite his lack of action this season, and said last night: "He definitely suits it here and he enjoys it. We're trying to help him improve and take him to the next stage in his career.
"He fits in naturally."
