Michael Carrick reveals Ben Doak transfer January plans as Liverpool loanee nets stunner
Ben Doak provided Arne Slot with a reminder of his immense talent on Tuesday night as he scored in Middlesbrough’s Championship win over West Bromwich Albion.
Boro had been leading 1-0 heading into the latter stages of the clash at the Riverside before Doak’s moment of magic sealed all three points for Michael Carrick’s side. Receiving the ball at the edge of the area, the on-loan Liverpool man arced a superb shot into the top corner to wrap the game up.
So impressive was Doak’s strike, team-mate Delano Burgzorg fell to the ground in celebration. It continues what has been an encouraging campaign for the Scotland international.

Doak played 10 times under Jurgen Klopp but a decision was made in the summer to send the attacker out on loan to gain more valuable first-team minutes. He’s thriving at Middlesbrough and reportedly attracted the attention of several Premier League sides in January, with Ipswich Town and Crystal Palace said to have seen bids knocked back.
Carrick confirmed after the win over West Brom that Doak will not be leaving Middlesbrough this window. “The deadline has passed for Ben,” the former United midfielder explained. “I said all along I was calm. Obviously we’re really happy he’s here, but genuinely, it hasn’t been a big thing for us.
“He showed again tonight how dangerous he is and then scored a terrific goal. It’s something he can do a little bit more, come inside onto his left foot, because it’s something he’s good at as well. I’m delighted with it.
“He’s got that weapon and unique threat. The way he plays the game, everyone has their own strengths, but the way Ben plays the game, he’s always in the game and always a threat. We’re obviously happy he’ll be staying here. He’s a big role and he’ll continue to do that for the time that he’s here.”
That at 19 years old Doak is one of the standout players for a side flying high in the Championship should give Slot and Liverpool hope he will be ready to step up to the Premier League next season. Whether he’s performing for Liverpool or not remains to be seen, but there will be no shortage of transfer interest either on a permanent or temporary basis if Liverpool opts against keeping Doak.
The teenager has had nine goal involvements from his 23 Championship appearances and his goal on Tuesday night saw Middlesbrough move into fifth place. A battle to secure an automatic spot looks unlikely - the north-east club could be 14 points off the top two come Wednesday night - but a play-off place is a very realistic possibility.
