Michael Schumacher's family have made an exciting announcement with the Formula One legend set to become a grandfather.

The German racing star's daughter Gina-Marie has announced that she and her husband Iain Bethke are expecting their first child, weeks after getting married.

In a social media post, the 27-year-old shared a photo of some pink 'new baby' balloons in a field next to a young horse foal and captioned it: "Impatiently awaiting the arrival of our little girl." Her brother Mick then added that he was "so excited" about the happy news.

It comes after Gina-Marie and her husband Bethke tied the knot earlier this year in a lavish ceremony at the family's villa in Majorca. It was widely reported in Germany after the ceremony that Schumacher had also been in attendance, in what would be his first public appearance in over a decade.

The F1 legend was seriously injured after hitting his head on a rock while skiing in the French Alps in December 2013, with the life-changing accident leaving him in a medically induced coma for several months. After returning to the family home on Lake Geneva the following year, the now-55-year-old still requires round-the-clock medical care.

His wife Corinna helps care for him alongside a team of medical professionals, and she has been fiercely protective of her husband's privacy ever since the accident.

Only a small circle of trusted family members and friends have been allowed to visit him and know the intimate details of his condition, and while more people were in attendance at his daughter's wedding, it was also reported that guests were required to leave their mobile phones at the door to prevent any unauthorised photos of Schumacher being taken.

Opening up on caring for her husband, Corinna said she "misses him every day," adding: "It's not just me who misses him. It's the children, the family, his father, everyone around him. Everybody misses Michael, but Michael is here - different, but here. He still shows me how strong he is every day."

"We live together at home. We do therapy. We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he's comfortable. And to simply make him feel our family, our bond. And no matter what, I will do everything I can.

"We all will. We're trying to carry on as a family, the way Michael liked it and still does," she continued. "And we are getting on with our lives. It's very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible. Michael always protected us, and now we are protecting Michael."
