Michael Schumacher's son welcomes comparisons with legendary father

Mick Schumacher has called comparisons to his father ‘very special’.

Mick, son of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher, is set to begin his first Formula 2 season in Bahrain this year.

Although being the son of the seven-time F1 world champion, the 19-year-old German has brushed off suggestions of pressure.

Indeed Schumacher Jr, who is to drive for Prema, insists he is ‘honoured’ by the comparison.

“Being compared to my father was never a problem for me,” he told the BBC.

“Being compared to the best driver in F1 history is the goal you want to achieve and to have that as my idol and father is very special.

“I feel honoured to be compared to him because I just learn and try to improve.”

Michael Schumacher, now 50, has not been seen since a tragic skiing accident in December 2013.

At the time, the F1 icon suffered severe brain injuries and his family have kept his condition private ever since.

His son Mick subsequently joined the Ferrari driver academy, with whom Schumacher Sr spent 10 years and won five of his world titles.

He added: “I can learn very much from Ferrari because they have so much experience and I will want to work with them to achieve the maximum I can.

“The first impressions I had from Ferrari was very heart-opening, welcoming me in a family which was always part of my family.”
