Michail Antonio involved in serious car crash as West Ham releases statement
West Ham United has confirmed that its striker Michail Antonio is conscious in hospital after he was involved in a car crash.
A club statement, issued on Saturday, said: "West Ham United can confirm that Michail Antonio is in a stable condition following a road traffic accident this afternoon in the Essex area. Michail is conscious and communicating and is currently under close supervision at a central London hospital. At this difficult time, we kindly ask everyone to respect the privacy of Michail and his family. The Club will make no further comment this evening, but will issue a further update in due course."
Antonio, 34, has featured in all of West Ham's Premier League games so far this season, scoring one goal and registering one assist for Julen Lopetegui's side.
The Jamaica international began his career at non-league club Tooting & Mitcham United before making the step up to the Football League with Reading in 2008.
Antonio spent four years at Reading, being sent out on loan on several occasions during his time there, before signing for Sheffield Wednesday in 2012. Antonio moved to Nottingham Forest in 2014, spending a season there before finally settling at West Ham a year later.
Antonio is West Ham's all-time top scorer in Premier League history with 68 goals — 21 more than the man in second place, Paolo Di Canio — and has scored a total of 83 goals for the Hammers in all competitions.
Antonio was born in Wandsworth, South London to Jamaican parents, and in 2021 accepted a call-up from the Jamaica national team.
Aged 31 when he made his international debut, Antonio has gone on to score five times in 21 appearances for Jamaica, with his most recent goal for the nation coming in a September win over Honduras.
