Middlesbrough achieve Kelechi Iheanacho breakthrough - with medical now scheduled
MIDDLESBROUGH are closing in on the loan signing of Kelechi Iheanacho, with the striker set to begin a medical at Rockliffe Park today ahead of completing a switch from Sevilla.
Boro have agreed the terms of a loan deal with the La Liga side that will see Iheanacho move to the Riverside for the remainder of the season.
The Teessiders will pay a significant proportion of Iheanacho’s wages as part of the agreement that has been struck with Sevilla, with discussions understood to be ongoing about whether a clause for a permanent transfer will be included as part of the deal.
Emmanuel Latte Lath is set to complete his switch to MLS side Atlanta United in the next 24 hours or so, having travelled to the United States at the end of last week. Boro have accepted a financial package from Atlanta this worth around £22m.
Iheanacho is regarded as an exciting short-term replacement for the Ivory Coast international, having previously impressed in English football with Manchester City and Leicester City.
The 28-year-old scored 61 goals in 232 senior appearances for Leicester prior to moving to Sevilla last summer, but has struggled to establish himself in the Spanish top-flight.
He has scored three goals in 11 outings for Sevilla, but has been allowed to leave on a temporary basis to increase his chances of securing regular game time in the second half of the season.
Having been playing and training regularly with Sevilla, he should be able to hit the ground running as Boro look to secure at least a play-off place in the remainder of the campaign.
He is set to be joined in the Boro squad by Aston Villa winger Samuel Iling-Junior, who is also expected to complete a move to Teesside ahead of tomorrow night’s transfer deadline.
Former Chelsea youngster Iling-Junior joined Villa from Juventus in the summer before returning to Italy to link up with Bologna on loan.
But the 21-year-old is set to be recalled after making just 16 appearances in all competitions and not starting a Serie A game. And he's now poised to link up with Boro until the end of the season.
Iling-Junior is an 11-time England Under-21 international and was a regular for Juventus last season. He's versatile, having also played as a wing-back during his time in Italy, and Brighton and Tottenham were also linked before his summer move to Villa.
He will further boost an attack that has already been bolstered by the capture of Morgan Whittaker this month, with the former Plymouth winger set to make his Boro debut in tomorrow night’s Wear-Tees derby against Sunderland.
