Middlesbrough kick-off at Portsmouth delayed with players taken off after medical emergency

Middlesbrough's Championship clash with Portsmouth was delayed with the players taken back off the pitch ahead of kick-off at Fratton Park.

Referee Gavin Ward had just blown his whistle to start the match before quickly halting proceedings as he became aware of a medical emergency in the home end of Fratton Park. Medical emergency crews were seen attending to a spectator as other supporters tried to make room, while helping staff by holding up large blankets to try and private privacy.

For a little while the players of both Boro and Portsmouth remained on the pitch and kicked footballs amongst one another as they attempted to stay warm for kick-off. However, at around 3.05pm Ward whistled and motioned for the players to return to the dressing room as an update in the ground thanked supporters for their patience and understanding with the delay.

After medical professionals worked on the supporter for over 25 minutes, he was stretchered away down the touchline at Fratton Park as supporters from both sides respectfully applauded. The players then re-emerged just before 3.30 pm, with the game starting at 3.35pm.

Earlier in the Championship, Cardiff beat Swansea 3-0, Hull beat Millwall 1-0 and QPR won 1-0 at Plymouth. Burnley and Sunderland drew 0-0 last night.
