MIDDLESBROUGH are assessing their midfield options ahead of Monday's transfer deadline, with a move for Glen Kamara now off the table after the emergence of interest from Saudi.

Kamara was a potential target for Boro this month but the Championship club can't compete with the finances on offer in Saudi. Al Shabab are said to be in advanced talks with Rennes over a move for the Finland international.

Boro had held talks with Rennes over the potential loan signing of Kamara after the 29-year-old had fallen out of favour following the appointment of Jorge Sampaoli.

But there was always an acceptance that it would be a difficult deal to do this month.

Boro remain keen on strengthening in midfield ahead of Monday's deadline but will only pursue players who they feel can improve the squad in the second half of the season. Discussions are ongoing between Boro's recruitment and coaching team.

Whether or not Boro are able to strengthen in midfield will likely have an impact on the future of Dan Barlaser. Derby County are interested in the 28-year-old but Boro won't want to risk leaving themselves short in the second half of the season, with Jonny Howson having spent much of the campaign on the sidelines so far.

Barlaser has entered the last 18 months of his contract at Boro.
