Middlesbrough player ratings vs West Brom with four 8s as one player emphasises his importance
Middlesbrough grabbed a mood-lifting victory against West Brom at the Riverside on Tuesday evening to move back into the play-offs.
Stunning strikes from Hayden Hackney and Ben Doak grabbed Boro their much needed victory - their first at the Riverside in the calendar year. It saw them leapfrog West Brom the table and move back to fifth.
With two changes that proved important for Boro, here’s how the players rated in the 2-0 victory.
Tom Glover - 6
Only one major save to have to make as he pushed a second-half header onto the post, albeit he looked unconvincing in doing it. Good claim late on to settle nerves but otherwise not needed for much.
Luke Ayling - 7
Returning to the side after George Edmundson’s late loan recall from Ipswich, he managed to get through the full 90 minutes in a real positive for Boro. In a tricky second-half period he used his experience and nous to help Boro through.
Rav van den Berg - 8
A real classy defensive performance. Boro were put under a lot more pressure in the second half but, for being just 20, he dealt with it in such a composed manner. Important defending.
Dael Fry - 8
Like Van den Berg, Fry was superb at the back for Boro. West Brom tried deliveries from out wide and long balls over the top in the second half, but Fry was alert to the danger throughout and defended the goal well.
Neto Borges - 7
A really positive display from the Brazilian. Like Saturday, he attacked well and avoided a defensive lapse this time. He played a major role in the first goal, setting off the attacking by outmuscling his marker before driving forward.
Aidan Morris - 8
On his first start since November, his importance to Boro was so evident. His aggression to win the ball back higher was evident throughout a dominant first half and he was excellent throughout, proving he has the quality on the ball to add to his bite.
Hayden Hackney - 8
No coincidence that his best performance for some time came with Morris back in the side. The American’s aggression and comfort lying deeper allows Hackney to get further forward and get involved more in attacks. Speaking of which, what a goal to put Boro in front.
Ben Doak - 7
Lively throughout and causing his full-back plenty of problems. But until the 83rd minute his end-product had been lacking. That was until an excellent Boro break that ended with him killing the game off in some style with a wonderful finish.
Finn Azaz - 7
A little ponderous once or twice early on but grew in influence in the game. Didn’t quite manage to create any major chance on this occasion but was well-involved throughout in the positive attacking play, with Boro’s flow much better than recent games.
Delano Burgzorg - 7
Not Boro’s brightest attacking player in this one but still a threat throughout with his pace. That came to the fore more in the second half as West Brom gained more control. Burgzorg’s really good in those kind of moments to quickly advance Boro up the pitch and then slow it down or buy a foul.
Emmanuel Latte Lath - 7
No goals for the Ivorian in this one but another really-hard-working performance throughout as he ran off the shoulder well, was unlucky with a couple of first-half nearly-moments, was disciplined defensively when he had to be and set off the attack for the crucial second goal.
