Middlesbrough predicted line-up vs Leeds United with two 'harsh' changes from Burnley draw
Middlesbrough will be hoping to build on a positive draw on Friday evening as they head to Leeds United on Tuesday for another clash against promotion rivals.
As well as belief from how they competed with such a strong Burnley side, Boro can take heart from the fact they’ve already won at Elland Road this season too. Albeit with two much-changed sides, Boro beat the Whites 3-0 in the first-round of the Carabao Cup.
With considerations over fatigue and freshness after Friday’s battle in such testing conditions, Carrick is now assessing his players ahead of Tuesday’s trip. Here’s our predicted team.

GK - Seny Dieng - While perhaps harsh on Sol Brynn, Carrick made a telling selection decision at Turf Moor when he restored Dieng to the Boro line up. While Brynn has immense potential and will almost certainly be a future Boro number one, at this current stage of their careers, it feels like Dieng’s experience edges it for him.
DR - Luke Ayling - An incredibly harsh decision on Anfernee Dijksteel, who was once again excellent at Burnley, his selection in the first place felt very much catered to keeping Ayling fresh for Leeds. While Dijksteel has again posed the question of whether he deserves to be ahead of Ayling in the pecking order now, it feels likely that Carrick gives the veteran his Elland Road return.
DC - Dael Fry - Just back from injury, there’s an argument that Carrick might restore Matt Clarke on Tuesday to be careful with Fry’s workload. However, immense on Friday, we’re predicting that Fry gets the nod for this one, with his rest likely slated for Saturday against Millwall, where Clarke will suit the physical demands of that game.
DC - George Edmundson - Another solid showing at Burnley, the only slight on his record was the missed headed opportunity in the second half that might have won Boro the game. But having been solid defensively again, Carrick will need him to be so again at Elland Road.
DL - Neto Borges - Lukas Engel is getting ever-closer to fitness. But in the period he’s been out injured, it feels like Borges, without massively excelling, has done more than enough to cement his position as first-choice.
CM - Dan Barlaser - Jonny Howson will also be returning to Elland Road and, at this stage, every trip there could be the last for the 36-year-old. Nevertheless, still building his sharpness after an early injury suffered at Leeds, Barlaser feels like the better option for such a key game right now. He stepped up really well at Burnley.
CM - Hayden Hackney - While he improved in the second half, Hackney wasn’t at his best at Burnley, particularly in possession. Despite that, his energy and positivity remains crucial for Boro and, but for an unknown injury issue, it feels unlikely he doesn’t start.
RW - Ben Doak - A huge plus for Boro at Burnley was that, along with Edmundson, Doak managed to avoid his fifth yellow of the season, with the threshold now raised to ten before suspension occurs. That’s crucial for Boro because Doak continues to petrify defences and will be up against a stand-in left-back on Tuesday with Junior Firpo almost certainly out.
AM - Finn Azaz - Tough conditions and a different kind of Boro performance at Burnley meant Azaz didn’t have his usual influence in the game at Turf Moor and yet he still managed to create a couple of big chances. Carrick will hope he can continue his fine form on Tuesday.
LW - Delano Burgzorg - Riley McGree will be itching to get back in but Burgzorg deserves to be the man starting right now - which is a great position to be in after McGree felt so integral to Boro and how well they played for so long. Burgzorg has already scored once at Elland Road this season too, which should be a psychological boost for him.
ST - Emmanuel Latte Lath - Tommy Conway has started the last two games and will be desperate to play in a game of this magnitude too. But in the interest of sharing the load in a three-game week, this feels like an ideal game for Latte Lath even if it's another harsh change. Against such a strong team, his pace off the last shoulder can cause problems for Leeds's defence. He's enjoyed success against them in the past.
