Middlesbrough squad numbers for January signings as Kelechi Iheanacho shirt confirmed
Middlesbrough’s January signings have all been assigned their new squad numbers - with Kelechi Iheanacho taking on a prestigious shirt.
Five of the six signings were included in Monday night’s match-day squad for the defeat against Sunderland, meaning we learned the squad numbers they would be wearing for the rest of this season. In the case of Iheanacho, he was unveiled on the pitch ahead of the game, having not been signed in time to be part of the game.
Ryan Giles debuted at Preston North End and it was revealed then the left-back would wear the number 28 on his return, having worn the number 3 jersey currently worn by Rav van den Berg in his first spell at the club. The new shirt number was vacated last summer when loan man Lewis O’Brien left the club.

New goalkeeper Mark Travers, meanwhile, will wear the number 32. He’s the sixth Boro shot-stopper to wear the number, following in the footsteps of Jamie Jones, Dejan Stojanovic, Jayson Leutwiler, Jason Steele and David Knight.
Morgan Whittaker, meanwhile, takes the number 11. It was vacated last month when Isaiah Jones left to join Luton Town, who Whittaker ultimately arrived to replace. Other notable owners of the jersey in Boro’s past include Aaron Ramsey, Andraz Sporar, Patrick Bamford, and of course, Fabrizio Ravanelli.
George Edmundson retained the number 25 shirt that he wore in the first half of the season before being recalled from his loan by Ipswich Town. New loanee Samuel Iling-Junior, meanwhile, will wear 29 during his stay at the Riverside from Aston Villa. Most recently worn by Sam Greenwood, Iling-Junior will hope more to emulate its previous occupant - the man who scored 29 goals while wearing 29 on his back, Chuba Akpom.
That just left Iheanacho’s squad number to be decided. And with the number vacated by Emmanuel Latte Lath's exit this month, Iheanacho will take on the prestige and pressure of being Boro's new number 9. Latte Lath has worn the number for the last two seasons, while the last player to take it on mid-season was Jordan Rhodes. It wouldn't be a bad thing if the Nigerian arrived and emulated Rhodes - whose six goals helped see Aitor Karanka's side over the line in the promotion battle in 2016.
