Middlesbrough make Zach Hemming plan clear after recalling goalkeeper from Leyton Orient loan
Zach Hemming has been recalled from his loan move at Leyton Orient by Middlesbrough, with a view to finding an alternative loan move for the young goalkeeper.
Hemming was due to spend the whole season with the League One side, where Sol Brynn spent the season on loan last term. However, Hemming lost his place in the O’s side in October and has been restricted to appearances in the EFL Trophy since.
As such, Boro have taken the decision to recall him. In a statement on the club website confirming the decision, the club said: “The 24-year-old is likely to complete the season with a second loan move in a bid to secure regular football.”

Meanwhile, Orient boss Richie Wellens said: “Zach has been a brilliant character in our dressing room during the first half of the season and we wish him all the best for the future. He is at the stage in his career where he wants to, and needs to, be playing regularly and, unfortunately, we can’t offer him that at present.
“Zach showed himself to be a model teammate when he was with us, and particularly when he came out of the team in October. His bubbly personality and positive mindset have been a huge asset to us, even when he hasn’t been playing, and he was a very popular member of the squad. We saw flashes of his quality on the pitch as well and he will be a great addition to Middlesbrough or wherever he ends up next.”
Hemming had a difficult spell at Leyton Orient. After a difficult start to the season, Wellens was particularly scathing in his criticism of the Boro academy graduate, as he blamed him for costing them a match after an error. He would later come to the keeper’s defence and credited him for earning the side three points in a 1-0 win over Reading.
But the Bishop Auckland born shot-stopper, who spent the two previous seasons on loan with St Mirren, would retain his place in the team for only five more games before losing his place in the league side.
Hemming had returned from Scotland last summer in the hope of being able to force his way into Michael Carrick’s plans at Boro. He was given a chance early in pre-season but it was quickly decided that Brynn would be the man Boro brought into their squad this season, with the Leyton Orient loan move for Hemming coming early in the summer.
While Boro have a bit of an issue in between the sticks now as Brynn faces three months out injured at the same time that Seny Dieng is also struggling with a hip flexor issue, the club made clear their stance to loan Hemming out again. Due to the two-clubs-per-season rule, if Hemming were to play for Boro this month to help them through their current injury situation, he therefore wouldn’t be able to move elsewhere this month, while someone would have to be re-registered from the current squad in order to find a place for Hemming to be eligible.
