It looked like a final farewell for Miguel Almiron at Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon as the Paraguayan winger prepares for a return to the MLS.

Almiron was an unused substitute in the 4-1 hammering at the hands of Bournemouth and may not get the chance to run out at St James' Park again as Atlanta United move to re-sign the winger. It was fitting, then, that Wor Flags produced a classy tribute to Almiron, with a large 'Wor Miggy' banner from yesteryear wheeled out once more for the 30-year-old.

Even before the game got under way there was a nod to Almiron's potential exit as he arrived at the ground. Walking towards the tunnel, the soon-to-be departing star heard a shout of 'please stay' from a young Newcastle fan who was already in the ground.

That produced a small reaction from Almiron, who simply smiled at the youngster before making his way to the dressing room. Despite the young fan's desire, it looks increasingly likely the player will in fact leave Tyneside this month.

Almiron first attracted the interest of Charlotte FC before they moved their attention to former Crystal Palace flyer Wilfried Zaha this month. That allowed Atlanta to swoop in and push for an emotional return for one of their greatest ever players.

Discussing Almiron's future on Friday, Howe said: "With him, currently, anything could happen. But my concern is getting the squad focused for tomorrow's game. He's been top class.

"As you know, his playing persona is his personality. He's happy, a brilliant professional. He will come in every day and his training performances, his focus, his personality has been consistent. I've no issues with him on that side."

Newcastle are said to value Almiron at £10m and receiving a fee of that nature will hopefully unlock some much-needed spending power between now and the end of January.
