Arsenal transfer headlines continued to be dominated by Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins. With deadline day for the January window approaching, Mikel Arteta will need to work quickly in order to get new signings into Emirates Stadium.

The chances of Watkins being one of those continues to dwindle especially following Jhon Duran's confirmed switch to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr. Following a major update on Saturday, Arteta's pursuit of the 27-year-old looks to have been further derailed.

In terms of alternatives, Benjamin Sesko, Viktor Gyokeres and Matheus Cunha have all been linked but it is unlikely that any move so late into the window. The latter sealing a deadline day switch was seen as a possibility but even that now looks to be off the table.

With all that being said, football.london has taken a look at the latest Arsenal January transfer news and rumours.

Watkins update

In his final chance to impress before deadline day, Watkins picked up an unfortunate muscle injury. During the first half of Aston Villa's 2-0 defeat to Wolves, Watkins was captured wincing after running forward with the ball and he was subsequently taken off.

"I changed him because he was feeling pain in his muscle," Unai Emery said in a press conference. "Tomorrow we will test him. It's not something important but I changed him for this injury."

football.london says: That could well be that for Watkins joining Arsenal. Though the initial update was positive, a muscular issue could still rule him out for a number of weeks and it is hard to imagine Arteta would sanction a move for a player that cannot make an immediate impact.

There is still the chance an attacking addition is made but it will likely have to be a loan with so little time remaining. Unfortunately, there is no standout name that could join with Mathys Tel now seemingly set to remain at Bayern Munich.

It is worth noting however, that a late change of heart or swoop for a different target could still take place as crazier things have definitely happened in the final hours of deadline day.

Cunha contract agreed

As per Sami Mokbel of the Mail, Cunha has agreed a new contract at Wolves, but it is expected to include a release clause. Arsenal have been one of several Premier League clubs linked with the forward but he now looks set to remain at Molineux.

The 25-year-old made his final decision perfectly clear in his celebration after scoring against Villa with a formal announcement likely to follow.

football.london says: Cunha looks to be another attacking target that is surely staying put. Arsenal not being proactive in this window has certainly cost them and not strengthening the squad could prove to be a fatal error.

Given there is just one full day remaining of the ongoing transfer window, any deal that is pursued from this point on could easily be on unfavourable terms for Arsenal, but the need for a player may outweigh that.

Though it was perhaps never the plan to recruit, needing to be reactive in these scenarios immediately places teams on the back foot and the Gunners appear to now be discovering exactly that.
