Mikel Arteta sends fresh Arsenal transfer plea to Josh Kroenke as harsh January reality clear
Mikel Arteta has provided a fresh update on Arsenal's ongoing search to bring in new signings during the January transfer window. The Gunners are yet to welcome any additions but injury issues, particularly in attack, have resulted in a considerable effort being taken to add depth to Arteta's squad.
Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka are the key players ruled out for an extended period, while Ethan Nwaneri and Raheem Sterling have both returned from minor issues in recent weeks. As opposed to acquiring a winger, the transfer links involving Arsenal suggest a striker is wanted.
Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres have all been linked with a switch this month, though considerable funds will likely be required to sign any of the trio. It is far more likely that all three depart this summer and subsequently Arsenal sign one then.

However, the need for a striker coming in mid-season is clear with Arteta again offering a clear transfer plea. Asked if it was essential for Arsenal to sign one, he replied: "Have I ever said no to a striker?
"We lost two very important players in Saka and Jesus, we lack goals and options in the front, it's clear. If we can get the right player, that's what we're actively looking at." Interim sporting director Jayson Ayto and co-chair Josh Kroenke are undoubtedly looking in the market.
However, Arteta's response to the possibility of no one coming in was telling of the January market state and the club's current progress in making new signings. "That's an option. It depends on the market and many other factors," he openly admitted on Friday morning.
To avoid spending a significant amount, loan arrivals are far more likely but Arsenal will have to look abroad with Arteta ruling out early departures for Raheem Sterling and Neto. Due to Premier League rules, the Gunners cannot sanction a third loan addition from another English club.
