Mikel Merino copies Mikel Arteta after scoring vs Leicester as Arsenal hero delivers big statement
Arsenal's newest hero shares the same name with his manager at the Emirates Stadium. And following the win over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium, that's not the only thing they share by the looks of things.
Without a recognised striker in the absence of Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz due to injury, Mikel Arteta opted with a front line of Ethan Nwaneri, Raheem Sterling and Leandro Trossard against the Foxes. And it was Trossard who was leading the line.
Teenage superstar Nwaneri was the standout performer in the game, impressing with deft touches, killer passes and some excellent dribbles and crosses. But Trossard and Sterling flattered to deceive.

With Arsenal needing a goal, Arteta threw on Mikel Merino as a striker. And the gamble paid off in spades.
Merino rose to meet a Nwaneri cross nine minutes from time and then tapped in deftly from a Trossard centre to double up for the Gunners and double his Premier League goal tally in the process.
Similarities could be drawn between Merino and his boss. At his best for Everton and the Gunenrs, Arteta was a gifted midfielder, able to get stuck in when needed, but being the creative spark for his side too. He also popped up with some crucial goals, able to work from box-to-box when required.
Merino is the same sort of player and while striker is not his preferred position, he has shown he can do a job for his manager in just 21 minutes of action. Arteta could be the right manager, given Merino's profile similarities to him, to get the best out of the midfielder.
It was not just his play that resembled Arteta's though. After his second goal against the Foxes, Merino ran off to celebrate and juped into the air, throwing his fist towards the celebrating supporters, in just the same way as Arteta had done during his playing days.
On Arsenal Reddit, a video was mocked up of the two celebrations next to each other and the similarities are extraordinary. You could say the same about many players celebrating like that, of course, but it brought up an interesting talking point nonetheless.
