Newcastle United's hunt for reinforcements looks likely to be put on hold until the summer. The Magpies are planning on keeping their powder dry even if they decide to cash in on one of their first team stars this month.

Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly look the two most likely departures from St James' Park this window. Almiron is on the verge of a move to Atlanta United in a deal that could be worth around £11million to Newcastle.

Kelly is more likely to stay despite Fenerbahce's interest, and Eddie Howe doesn't want to weaken his squad too much given it seems that he won't be able to strengthen this month due to PSR constraints. When the summer window opens, however, it will be a different story.

Then, Newcastle could be in the market for four or five players, including a right winger, a centre forward, a centre half and a new goalkeeper. The Magpies will also look at strengthening at right-back if Kieran Trippier departs.

A number of strikers have already been linked to the club this month, including Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The former England man is out of contract at the end of the season and Howe is known to be a fan of his, despite his patch goalscoring and fitness record.

The 27-year-old has struggled with a number of injuries in recent seasons, and has only scored twice this season, his last goal coming in September. Last campaign, he hit the back of the net eight times in 38 matches, with a mini purple patch towards the end of the season helping Everton reach safety despite a points deduction.

Now, it seems that new Everton manager David Moyes will have to rely on him to do the same again, with the Toffees struggling near the relegation zone. It could be a swansong for Calvert-Lewin, who is expected to leave the club in the summer when his contract expires.

Former Newcastle United star Shearer believes Calvert-Lewin could be the man to rescue Everton, but questions whether the player has the 'hunger and thirst' to be a top-class goalscorer again. If anyone knows about leading the line, it's the Premier League's all-time top scorer.

Shearer told Betfair: “David will be looking at the strikers he has, and Everton just haven't got the bodies in there, they've got Beto and Calvert-Lewin. Both of them look as if it's just not going for them in front of the goal.

“I don't know Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s lifestyle, I don't know what's going on with him, but if you've done it once, you can do it again. Whether he's got the hunger, whether he's got the thirst, the energy and all of those things that you have to have to keep going again and to keep getting into the area and scoring those goals and being the best that you can be, I don’t know.

“I mean, we haven't seen anything anywhere near that and he’s been miles off it, both in performances and goals. I know they don't get a lot of chances, and it's probably a team that, as a striker, you wouldn't want to play in that that often because of the lack of chances they create, but he did miss a big chance the other night.”
