Watch: Millwall score maddest goal you may ever see to seal FA Cup progress

Millwall cruised into the fourth round of the FA Cup after an extraordinary opening goal from Mihailo Ivanovic (watch below) sparked a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Dagenham & Redbridge.

Ra’ess Bangura-Williams scored on his debut as Millwall cruised to victory. Dagenham & Redbridge, who sit 15th in the National League, did little to disrupt their Championship hosts’ rhythm as they gifted Ivanovic a first-half opener before Casper De Norre doubled their tally after the interval.

Bangura-Williams, who signed a long-term deal with his boyhood club last week, came off the bench to put the result beyond doubt as Millwall booked a fourth-round tie at Leeds on the weekend of February 8.

The opening 25 minutes resembled an attack versus defence training drill as Dagenham & Redbridge were penned in their own half, being limited to aimless clearances as opposed to creating spells of possession.

Despite showcasing their superiority in midfield, the hosts were not using the dominant share of the ball to their advantage in the final third.

A series of skied shots and Joe Bryan’s free-kick – which sailed over the crossbar – was all they had to show for themselves as the scores remained level.

But that did not to stay the same for too long when a series of mishaps at the back gifted Millwall’s misfiring attackers with a goal.

A cross from George Honeyman met the head of the unmarked Jake Cooper, who directed the ball across the six-yard box and into the path of Ivanovic.

Once the forward’s lunged attempt was pushed back into danger by goalkeeper Elliot Justham, Ivanovic was pulled down by Hessenthaler before he bizarrely nodded the rebound over the line when lying on the floor.

The clumsy challenge in the box would no doubt have led to a penalty without Ivanovic’s unconventional finish and such defending summed up Dagenham & Redbridge’s half entirely, with a poorly-executed corner and a heavy touch in the box in stoppage-time by Josh Rees being all they had to show for themselves at the break.

In the second half, the one-sided nature of the tie remained the same as a well-worked move after 70 minutes doubled the hosts’ score.

Bryan surged down the left, with his chipped cross towards the back post being finished on the full by De Norre, who showed great movement to go undetected in the area before guiding his effort into the right side netting.

Alex Neil’s men demonstrated the cutting edge which they lacked early on in the match and 20-year-old substitute Bangura-Williams got in on the act with a driven finish across goal to make it 3-0, five minutes from time.

“Gutted” Young as Dag & Red fall short

No fairytale story for interim Dag & Red manager Lewis Young, who is Ashley’s younger brother.

“I’m a little bit gutted, I was talking to the players at half-time saying we didn’t show our true face,” he told ITV Sport. “There was a 15-minute period at the start of the second half where we had a couple of moments. But look, we’ve come to a quality team and their class has shown. Unfortunately we didn’t come out on top.

Sometimes, there is a little bit of fear. We’ve come to a good stadium and had all the media that leads into … like I said to the players, it’s just a football game.

We’ll learn from it, hopefully it will stand us in good stead.”

Alex Neil speaks to ITV

Millwall’s new manager is all smiles after getting a first victory under his belt:

“I thought it was an enjoyable game for us, I thought the players moved the ball around really well. We scored three goals, probably should have scored more. They made it tough for us but when we got the second goal, that is when it started to run away from them ... there is nothing better when you put a few young lads on and one scores.”

Dag & Red’s dejected players at full-time

Dagenham & Redbridge met their match tonight. However, there are positives to take from their run and defenders Paul Kalambayi and Harry Phipps performed superbly.

There will be no non-league teams in the FA Cup fourth round for the first time since the 2019-2020 edition.

Ivanovic and De Norre’s post-match reflections

Speaking to ITV, Mihailo Ivanovic on his instinctive salmon header to open the scoring:

“I just saw the ball staying there and was saying ‘for this club, I would throw myself [at it] and shoot it with my head.’ I tried and succeeded. The celebration after was Mitrovic because he is my idol from a young age.”

Awarded man of the match, Millwall midfielder Casper De Norre acknowledged the difficulty facing a motivated non-league side:

“Once you get that first goal it opens up a little but if you don’t have a second, they have a moment here or there. Second half they had a spell where they were a little bit dangerous, having a chance and a corner here or there. But once we got that second, that was the important one to put it to bed.”

09:23 PM GMT

Full time: Millwall 3 Dag & Red 0

Kendall is flagged for offside as he looks for a one-on-one and Madley blows the final whistle. Dagenham & Redbridge gave their all, but Millwall had all the chances and showed the gulf in class, playing patiently to find breakthroughs.

They will go to Leeds United in the fourth round of the FA Cup. There may well be some needle there, given the historical rivalry.

09:18 PM GMT

90th min +1: Millwall 3 Dag & Red 0

Just three minutes of added time, despite the recent interminable substitution. Pereira squares a ball in a rare Dag & Red attack but Cooper clears Millwall’s lines.

09:17 PM GMT

89th min: Millwall 3 Dag & Red 0

Dag & Red are gamely playing the ball around. Their legs have not gone, but Millwall have not had to over-extend themselves. They have had all the quality and the positive attacking play. Save for a sloppy spell in the opening 15 minutes of the second half, Alex Neil’s side have been on top.

09:14 PM GMT

GOAL! Millwall 3 Dag & Red 0 (Bangura-Williams)

Millwall debutant Ra’ees Bangura-Williams scores a silky solo goal, collecting the ball, weaving in and out past Eastman and finishing low past Justham.

That is the cherry on top for the Championship team.

09:11 PM GMT

83rd min: Millwall 2 Dag & Red 0

A pause for an injury. Ryan Leonard is sat down on the South Bermondsey turf, rolling down his sock. He took a painful one from Harry Phipps as he cleared a dangerous pass from Honeyman.

This is the danger with playing essentially a full-strength first XI. He limps off, substituted alongside Millwall’s two goalscorers.

Leonard → Harding

De Norre → Massey

Ivanovic → Kendall

09:06 PM GMT

79th min: Millwall 2 Dag & Red 0

George Saville connects with a sweet volley on the edge of the box but Eastman’s first action is to block his speculative effort.

Dag & Red are trying to get a foothold in the game. Hill finds Umerah on the edge of the box as they go direct, but his attempted back-heel rolls away.

09:02 PM GMT

75th min: Millwall 2 Dag & Red 0

Two Dag & Red changes and one for the home side, as slender winger Bangura-Williams makes his debut.

Junior Morias adds attacking impetus for the east Londoners, but it is likely too little, too late:

Mayor → Bangura-Williams

Rendall → Morias

N’Guessan → Eastman

08:59 PM GMT

GOAL! Millwall 2 Dag & Red 0 (De Norre)

The classiest move of the night ends in a second Millwall goal. Joe Bryan and Adam Mayor combined adroitly on the left, the ex-Fulham man roving into room and hanging a ball up to the back post.

Casper De Norre was there to volley it home on the edge of the six-yard box.

08:55 PM GMT

68 mins: Millwall 1 Dag & Red 0

De Norre finds Leonard breaking the offside trap and he makes it to the ball before it rolls out. However, he fails to find the onrushing Ivanovic with a powerful ball in. Dag & Red hustle the ball out for a corner.

08:52 PM GMT

65 mins: Millwall 1 Dag & Red 0

Another corner for the visitors from a deflected pass, but it sails into the arms of Lukas Jensen.

Millwall have not kicked on in the second-half, inviting more pressure and possession from the National League side. They have not killed this game yet.

08:51 PM GMT

64 mins: Millwall 1 Dag & Red 0

Azeez appears to have injured himself in that passage of play and he comes off.

Azeez Saville

08:49 PM GMT

61 mins: Millwall 1 Dag & Red 0

Azeez and Ivanovic link up well to put the winger into space down the right. He finds the Serbian striker by the penalty spot, unhassled by any defenders, but he powers his effort over the crossbar.

“Championship, you’re having a laugh,” comes the chant from the away end.

08:45 PM GMT

56 mins: Millwall 1 Dag & Red 0

Jake Cooper powers a header the wrong side of the back post from George Honeyman’s corner.

And down the other end, a half-chance for Dag & Red. Pereira feinted on the edge of the area and sent a low ball in. Josh Rees could not apply a finishing touch, out for a corner.

From the congested corner, a defensive header goes straight up into the air and a half-volley pounded into the turf ends up in the hands of Jensen.

08:42 PM GMT

54 mins: Millwall 1 Dag & Red 0

Lewis Young rings in the changes, bringing on two of his more prolific front-men. Maybe this can give the visitors some oomph and a fighting chance of a goal.

Stephenson → Umerah

Remy →  Pereira

08:39 PM GMT

49 mins: Millwall 1 Dag & Red 0

Dag & Red are more forward-thinking, threading passes together in Millwall’s half. Rutherford’s cross goes over the head of lone target-man Stephenson. A hint of menace there.

Their top scorer Pereira and Morias are on the bench, coming back from injuries, so there is more firepower there if they want it.

08:33 PM GMT

46 mins: Millwall 1 Dag & Red 0

Millwall kick off for the second-half. The away side will need to be more creative, decisive and stronger in their challenges. They have not created anything to give those fans who have travelled (albeit, all of 16 miles north-east) something to cheer. No point going out with a whimper.

08:31 PM GMT

Not a bad manager to copy...

08:20 PM GMT

Half-time: Millwall 1 Dag & Red 0

After a minute of added time, the whistle goes. It has been straightforward for Millwall. 70% possession and seven corners tells the story.

They have not tested Elliot Justham much and had a fair few long-range shots off target, but there is the feeling they can go through the gears if needed to. They have given the visitors from east London precious little time on the ball or opportunity to dictate.

08:14 PM GMT

43 mins: Millwall 1 Dag & Red 0

Tanganga spots Bryan’s run on the left and the ex-Fulham’s man effort in is blocked for another corner.

It is cleared quickly and Dag & Red can break with two. However, Remy’s searching ball lacks accuracy and he cannot find Hill.

No shots for the National League side yet. It’s difficult to see where a goal will come from, but while they are only a goal down, there is a chance.

08:08 PM GMT

37 mins: Millwall 1 Dag & Red 0

A first corner for Dag & Red, eliciting roars from their supporters. Jake Hessenthaler swings it in, but the referee gives a free-kick. Phipps was using his Millwall marker as a climbing frame.

08:05 PM GMT

34 mins: Millwall 1 Dag & Red 0

Femi Azeez moves smartly to run ahead of his man and Phipps stretches to clear for a corner. The non-league side are ripe for conceding a second goal this half, I feel.

Millwall are making the most of space on the flanks, peppering the penalty area with crosses and getting corner after corner. Time for another, but De Norre shoots waywardly.

08:02 PM GMT

GOAL! Millwall 1 Dag & Red 0 (Ivanovic)

A quirky, John Terry-esque show of technique from Mihailo Ivanovic puts Millwall ahead.

Honeyman sent a searching ball in from the left, Cooper got up high and Ivanovic strained every sinew to poke the ball his flick goalwards. Justham parried and with the ball lying tantalisingly close to the goal line, the 20-year-old crawled on the floor and headed it along the turf the final yard or so required.

Well, they all count.

07:55 PM GMT

25 mins: Millwall 0 Dag & Red 0

Another dangerous move down the flank is toe-punted out by Phipps for a Millwall corner. Kalambayi heads it out for another.

Honeyman’s delivery is flat and booted away. Dag & Red have a chance to build possession, or at least have a breather, but give the ball away cheaply. They need to find a bit more audacity going forward.

07:52 PM GMT

21 mins: Millwall 0 Dag & Red

Showing lots of intent on the right wing, Azeez got past Rutherford, and Phipps got a leg in to bundle his cross for a corner.

The ball comes through the throng for Cooper at the back post, who fires the ball into orbit. That was a half-chance. Alex Neil probably didn’t want a centre-back to be on the end of it.

07:50 PM GMT

19 mins: Millwall 0 Dag & Red 0

Azeez blasts well over from the edge of the area. A rare foray up the pitch for the underdogs ends as Remy is shrugged off the ball as he shapes to deliver a cross into the danger zone for Dag & Red.

07:47 PM GMT

15 mins: Millwall 0 Dag & Red 0

Yellow card for Josh Rees as Azeez deftly touched a ball on and threatened to advance on goal.

Joe Bryan’s left-footed free-kick effort from 25 yards out curls harmlessly over. Elliot Justham in the Dag & Red goal has not been tested yet.

07:44 PM GMT

No chances for the Championship side yet

07:41 PM GMT

10 mins: Millwall 0 Dag & Red 0

Millwall are camped out in their opponent’s half, stroking the ball around. Dag & Red are finding it hard to have any sustained time on the ball.

However, a mis-aimed Joe Bryan free kick relieves pressure. The non-leaguers break and send a ball over the top for Remy to chase. Leonard heads it back to the onrushing Jensen, but he is out of his area and the ball pings off his leg before the centre-back retrieves it and can clear. That was close to being a defensive calamity.

07:36 PM GMT

5 mins: Millwall 0 Dag & Red 0

Bryan and Honeyman link up well, sending passes into the box, but Millwall cannot get a shot away and their opponents win the second ball.

For Dag & Red, these opening minutes are all about settling quickly, winning challenges, having a shot or two and showing they cannot be pushed about or passed through easily.

07:33 PM GMT

2 mins: Millwall 0 Dag & Red 0

The ampersand is going to be getting a hammering tonight on my live text coverage. There can’t be many teams out there with one in their name.

A scrappy start, with the ball going a few times for midfield throw-ins.

07:31 PM GMT

Kick-off imminent

The teams stroll out onto the pitch as home fans sing “Hey Jude”. Managers Alex Neil and Lewis Young share a quick embrace, as the players do a few dynamic stretches on the pitch.

Dag & Red kick off going left to right in all yellow, against Millwall in dark navy and white kit and navy shorts.

07:27 PM GMT

Last moments for motivation

The Dag & Red players, in yellow shirts, shorts and socks, form a huddle in their dressing room. For a fair few, this will be the biggest match of their lives.

It is a time for final bits of psyching up before heading out onto the pitch and no doubt hearing some pleasantries from Millwall fans.

07:20 PM GMT

Dag & Red manager Lewis Young speaks to ITV

Ten minutes until kick-off, and Ashley Young’s younger brother has been in front of the cameras:

“We’re as ready as we can be, we’ve come down to what we know will be a really tough test, but we’re thoroughly enjoying it … we just want to show the best version of ourselves.

We know the magnitude of the game for the club as well as the opposition, they’re fantastic and they have a new manager, so they’ll have a new bounce.”

Win tonight and it could take the caretaker manager a long way to getting the job permanently. With away wins against Crewe Alexandra and AFC Wimbledon in recent rounds, Dag & Red are used to upsetting the odds on the road against Football League opposition.

07:13 PM GMT

Dag & Red’s unorthodox preparations at the Crystal Maze

Dagenham & Redbridge will be ready for any level of intensity and pressure at Millwall: they did some unorthodox team-building for this match at the Crystal Maze Live Experience, as well as taking part in Lazer Quest and Topgolf.

Veteran goalkeeper Elliot Justham’s family are all Millwall fans, which will potentially make for torn allegiances. “We’ve shown in the previous rounds, League Two [opponents or not], we can fight against anyone,” Justham told ITV.

07:05 PM GMT

Millwall manager Alex Neil speaks to ITV

“All the pressure is on us, we’re aware of that but I think you’ve got to embrace that and attack the game. We would expect to win the game … they won’t make it easy, you need to get a good early goal if you can.”

On only making three changes to his line-up:

“It’s a difficult one for us because I haven’t seen too much of the players and want to get an element of consistency. The last thing I want to do is make wholesale changes.”

On what he is expecting Dag & Red to bring:

“If I’m their coach, I’m saying ‘this is a free hit for us, enoy the game, get after them, show them you deserve to play at this level and can compete.’ We know that gives them an element of freedom that we don’t necessarily have.”

On hopefully getting his first win as Millwall manager tonight:

“It would be good to get that out of the way tonight so we can focus on what we have ahead of us.”

07:02 PM GMT

A third round low on big shocks

This year’s FA Cup third round has missed a giant-killing. Unless Dagenham & Redbridge can shock opponents playing three divisions higher, there will be no plucky run from a non-league side this season.

Tamworth took Tottenham Hotspur to extra-time, but with no replays anymore, they were denied a money-spinning trip to north London. Their illustrious opponents went and scored three unanswered goals to put the game beyond doubt.

06:53 PM GMT

Only three changes for Millwall

Alex Neil had promised squad rotation in his pre-match press conference, but he has gone for a strong line-up. There are only three changes to the team which drew 2-2 at Sheffield Wednesday nine days ago. Full steam ahead for a straightforward win, clearly. Top scorer Duncan Watmore is missing with a quad injury.

Former Arsenal youth player Josh Rees will offer the sternest threat for Dag & Red. He scored the winner in their second round tie away to AFC Wimbledon, adding to Junior Morias’ goal.

Millwall: Jensen; Bryan, Cooper (c), Tanganga, Leonard; Mitchell, De Norre; Azeez, Honeyman, Mayor; Ivanovic

Substitutes: Roberts, Wallace, Hutchinson, Saville, Bangura-Williams, Massey, Harding, Baker, Kendall

Dagenham & Redbridge: Justham; Kalambayi, Rutherford, Rendall; N’Guessan, Hessenthaler, Phipps, Remy; Stephenson, Rees, Hill

Substitutes: Francis, Eastman, Pereira, Umerah, Grego-Cox, Morias, Parsons

Referee: Robert Madley

Preview: Non-league side seek shock win in London derby

Good evening and welcome to Telegraph Sport’s live, minute-by-minute coverage of the FA Cup third round tie between Millwall and Dagenham and Redbridge.

It has not been a vintage round for giants being felled by plucky, cash-strapped minnows. Let’s see if the east Londoners positioned 15th in the National League, the lowest-ranked team left in the competition, can spring a shock against a side 74 places above them in the footballing pyramid.

Both sides are in a a period of managerial transition. Dag & Red parted ways with Ben Strevens on Boxing Day (quite the belated Christmas present) after a bad run of form. Lewis Young, the younger brother of Everton player Ashley, is the interim manager.

Similarly, Millwall appointed Alex Neil a fortnight ago, following the departure of Neil Harris. The Scotsman is waiting for his first victory as manager at the Den. This is a golden opportunity, with the south Londoners rightly starting as heavy favourites.

“I think you’ve got to be balanced in every approach for every opponent. We’ll give Dagenham the respect they deserve,” Neil said in his pre-match press conference.

The two sides have faced one another twice before. In this stage of the 2012 FA Cup, the Daggers held Millwall to a goalless draw at home before losing 5-0 in the replay. Millwall were helped by two goals from on-loan striker Harry Kane. Whatever happened to him?

The Championship side are well-drilled at the back but not big scorers: they have only netted more than once in the most recent of their last 18 matches. There will be chances to run at their weaker opposition tonight and exploit the gap in class, even if they are unlikely to be fielding Romain Esse. Their talented teenager winger is thought to be close to completing a transfer to Crystal Palace.

The winner tonight will be heading up the A1 for a fourth round FA Cup tie against Leeds United.

Kick-off is at 7.30pm GMT, line-ups to come shortly.
