Mohamed Salah might be stealing the spotlight, but he should count his blessings for having a creative wildcard like Trent Alexander-Arnold as a team-mate. That's the view of Alan Shearer, who heaped praise on the Liverpool defender's exceptional passing during their thrilling 6-3 victory over Tottenham on Sunday.

Although Alexander-Arnold officially registered just one assist during the match, he was pinging passes all over the pitch with incredible precision, prompting Shearer to describe him as a striker's dream. "I watch him and think, how many goals will they score with [Alexander-Arnold] in the team," the Newcastle legend said on The Rest Is Football podcast.

"His passes and his crosses are off the charts good. For a centre forward to be playing in that team with him and his ability, I've said it before, it's dreamland.

"Trent [gives Liverpool] exactly what Kevin De Bruyne [gives Manchester City]," he added. "When you want that cross or that pass delivered, more often than not they just deliver it. They're lucky guys, those Liverpool forwards, to have him delivering every single week for them."

Salah netted two goals in the second half to surpass Erling Haaland as the Premier League's outright leading scorer with 15 strikes. He also made history by becoming the first player in the competition to hit double digits in both goals and assists before Christmas.

The victory pushed Arne Slot's team four points clear at the summit, with the Reds capitalizing on second-placed Chelsea's 0-0 stalemate against Everton. They are now firm favourites to claim only their second Premier League title at the end of the season, and with a perfect record in the Champions League, few would bet against them going all the way in Europe's top tournament either.

Though, despite their on-field achievements, a troubling uncertainty continues to hang over Anfield. The futures of Salah, Alexander-Arnold, and Virgil van Dijk remain unresolved, with none of the trio yet agreeing contract extensions with the club.

In the New Year, all three players will have the option to sign pre-contract agreements with other clubs, as their current deals are set to expire at the end of the 2024/25 season. While each has expressed, or hinted at, a desire to remain at Liverpool, extensions are yet to be agreed, leaving their long-term futures on Merseyside in doubt.

Salah has now scored 229 Liverpool goals, with his brace on Sunday moving him past Billy Liddell into fourth spot in the club's all-time goalscoring list. He need just 12 more to leapfrog Gordon Hodgson into third.

Meanwhile, Alexander-Arnold recently overtook Steve McManaman to become Liverpool's third-highest assist maker in Premier League history. He's currently on 62, with only Salah and Steven Gerrard ahead of him in the list, and should he leave the Reds this summer it would be a huge blow for their "lucky" strikers.
