Mohamed Salah became the first player in Premier League history to register a goal and an assist in eight separate matches in a single season during Sunday's 5-0 victory over West Ham.

Salah had previously been tied with Harry Kane, Thierry Henry, Alan Shearer, Bruno Fernandes and Robin van Persie, all of whom achieved the feat seven times in a season.

The Liverpool forward's achievement is made more remarkable by the fact that the Reds have not even reached the halfway mark in their 2024-25 fixture schedule, with 20 more league games to come in the new year.

Salah assisted two goals in the win over West Ham, and each assist was impressive in a different way: the Egyptian numegged two West Ham players on the way to putting Cody Gakpo's goal on a plate for him in the first half, before ending a mazy second-half run by setting Diogo Jota up to finish past Alphonse Areola.

The 32-year-old scored his customary goal on the stroke of half-time when he received the ball just inside West Ham's penalty area before squeezing a shot past Areola at his near post.

After the match, Salah received praise from Reds head coach Arne Slot for another brilliant performance: “Mo and the word extraordinary is something I have heard a lot in the last six months. He truly deserves this. He doesn’t surprise us. We know what a player he is and what he is able to do. He works really hard aside from that when the opposition team has the ball. I would also add that when he scores the chance is made by other players on the pitch. But when you put him in those positions he is extraordinary.”

West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui also acknowledged Salah's excellence, telling Sky Sports: "Mo Salah is at the moment one of the best players, even the best player in the world."

Meanwhile, Salah's current Liverpool contract is due to expire at the end of the season and he admitted that he and the club are still far away from an agreement in negotiations over a renewal.

The Egyptian was asked by Sky Sports whether he could provide Liverpool fans with any good news on his future but responded: "No, we're far away from that. I don't want to put something in the media and people start saying stuff, but nothing has moved and now we're focused on the team."
