Mohamed Salah hits latest Liverpool landmark in Champions League clash with Lille
Mohamed Salah reached another Liverpool landmark on Tuesday as he netted against Lille, with the Egyptian registering his 50th European goal for the Reds.
After a dull opening half an hour in the Champions League game at Anfield, Salah sparked the game into life when he grabbed the opening goal following a slick Liverpool counter attack. Kostas Tsimikas retrieved the ball with a well-timed slide tackle on Jonathan David which released Curtis Jones. Liverpool’s no.17 then played an in-perfect first-time pass into Salah ’s path.
The winger had the option of passing to Darwin Nunez to his left, but instead curled first time past Lucas Chevalier goalkeeper, who had come out of his box to try and close down the shooting angle.

“Brilliant,” was the half-time verdict of former Liverpool forward Robbie Fowler, speaking on Amazon Prime. “We waxed lyrical about him before the game and we know what he’s capable of. Fifty goals in Europe. He’s a real talisman for Liverpool.”
It was a momentous goal as Salah moved on to a half century of European goal, a figure no-one in Liverpool’s history can better. With 41 goals in Europe, Steven Gerrrad is second in the club’s all-time list, followed by Sadio Mane (26), Roberto Firmino (24), Michael Owen (22) and Ian Rush.
Of Salah’s 50 goals in Europe, 45 have come in the Champions League, with five netted in last season’s Europa League, the only campaign during the attacker’s Liverpool career he hasn’t played in Europe’s premier competition.
He nearly made it 51 just before the break, when again he fastened on to a long ball from Luis Diaz, held off the defender and struck at goal. This time, however, he placed the ball just wide.
Salah’s strike against Lille was his 22nd goal of the season, while he’s also on remarkable 17 assists. He is currently on 233 Liverpool goals, just eight shy of Gordon Hodgson who is third in the Reds’ list of all-time top scorers.
Next up for Liverpool after the Champions League clash is a home fixture against Ipswich Town and a chance to extend its six-point gap at top of the Premier League table.
