Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk contracts, 3 new signings - Dream 2025 for Liverpool
We’re well into the festive season, and that of course means the New Year is just around the corner.
Liverpool will be looking forward to 2025, and hoping that it can continue the sort of form that it has shown during the first half of the current season. Sitting top of the Premier League and Champions League standings, and with a Carabao Cup semi-final to come, the chances of picking up some silverware are high.

New contracts for Salah and Van Dijk
Every Liverpool fan will be hoping this gets sorted before 2025 starts, but at this stage, it’s looking like the contract sagas will roll on into the New Year.
Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah have always seemed like the most likely to put pen to paper out of the three currently up for renewal. There have been various claims recently that they have been close to signing new deals, but nothing has been confirmed - yet.
It seems there might still be some work to do for Liverpool, but hopefully we aren’t left waiting too long for them to extend their stays.
Trent says no to Madrid
There will be plenty of Liverpool fans fearing the worst when it comes to Trent Alexander-Arnold, especially since he will be free to negotiate with a foreign club this time next week.
Real Madrid looks like it is front of the queue to secure his services, although Liverpool is of course not out of the running yet. The right-back has been handed a new contract offer, and hopefully discussions will be ongoing to see if they can thrash out a deal that works for both parties.
It’s easy to see the pull of Madrid, but playing for his hometown club will surely make this a difficult decision for Alexander-Arnold. Fingers crossed he turns down the move to Spain, and secures his legacy at Anfield.
Zubimendi changes his mind
There will be plenty of eyes on Martin Zubimendi next month, and even if he stays put at Real Sociedad again, the attention won’t go away when the summer rolls around.
Recent reports have suggested that the midfielder could well change his mind on his future, having turned down Liverpool last summer. Despite leaving Richard Hughes not too happy, the Reds are said to have retained an interest.
Of course, Ryan Gravenberch has been a revelation in the No.6 role, and Wataru Endo has proven he can be a more than able deputy. Having another truly quality option in the position though wouldn’t go amiss.
If Zubimendi really has changed his mind - and who could blame him, considering the form Liverpool has been in - then hopefully the Reds will make another play for him soon.
Kerkez in, new striker
As good as Liverpool has been this season, there are some areas in the squad that could do with some work.
Andy Robertson hasn’t been up to his usual standards so far, and even if he turns things around during the second half of the season - and you wouldn’t bet against him doing so - the Reds do need to be looking at potential long-term heirs to the left-back. He is, after all, the wrong side of 30 now, and with a contract that expires in 2026.
Plenty of names have emerged as options, including Antonee Robinson and Rayan Ait-Nouri, but Milos Kerkez perhaps looks to be the best fit. Impressing with Bournemouth at the moment, at just 21, his best years are still well ahead of him, and he looks like the sort of player who could be moulded into the sort of full-back that Robertson and Alexander-Arnold have shaped over the years.
A new striker should also be high on the shopping list. A lot of fans look like they’ve lost patience with Darwin Nunez now, and Diogo Jota isn’t the most reliable when it comes to injuries and fitness, so hopefully Hughes will be scouring the world for No.9 options as well.
Get the title wrapped up early
Liverpool is in a superb position in the Premier League. A four-point lead at Christmas, a game still in hand on their rivals, and Manchester City seemingly already out of the picture.
Arne Slot could barely have dreamed of a better first six months in the job - but the work isn’t done yet. The games continue to come thick and fast, and the Liverpool boss is going to have to find a way to juggle four competitions.
There can be no doubt that the league takes precedence, but hopefully, given the lead they currently hold, the Reds might be able to get things wrapped up early.
Obviously, there won’t be the domination that we saw in 2019/20 when Liverpool would have had the title wrapped up in March had it not been for the pandemic, but if the Reds can have it under wraps with a few games still to go, it could lead to even more glory…
Lucky number 7
Liverpool’s place in the last-16 of the Champions League is all but secure before the final two league phase games against Lille and PSV Eindhoven. Just one point from those fixtures will be enough to see the Reds avoid the extra play-off round.
Not having an extra couple of games added to the calendar could prove crucial to the hopes of silverware this season. It should benefit the push for the Premier League title, and going into the knockout stages as one of the seeded teams will hopefully hold Liverpool in good stead.
Of course, when you look at the clubs that could end up in the play-off round, it does seem likely that the Reds will be handed a tough fixture regardless in the last-16. They’ve shown themselves to be the best team in Europe right now though, and they shouldn’t fear anyone, especially after ending their rotten run against Real Madrid last month.
If they can get things wrapped up early domestically, then all focus can then be placed on Europe, and securing number seven in Munich.
