Carlos Mendes Gomes got over an hour under his belt as Wanderers’ B Team beat Wrexham Reserves 6-1 in the Central League.

Mendes Gomes has been building his fitness up following a lengthy spell on the sidelines with an Achilles injury

Trevon Bryan netted a second half hat trick and Luke Matheson was also among the scorers at Lostock.

The first half was tight but the breakthrough came on the stroke of half time when Matheson’s cross picked out Mark Isong and he made no mistake with a clinical header.

Wrexham equalised early in the second half when Harry Ashfield rose highest to nod home a dangerous corner.

Bolton were a tad fortunate to get back in front when Max Purvis attempted to clear James Westwood’s cross but could only divert the ball past Liam Hall and into his own net.

However, there was no luck involved with the third as Matheson latched onto Mendes Gomes’ pass, cut in from the left flank and picked out the bottom corner with a superb finish.

Substitute Bryan made it four with a cool finish across the goalkeeper and in off the post following some good work by Sonny Sharples-Ahmed.

Bryan doubled his tally after latching onto Jack Dallimore’s long ball and providing another composed finish past the onrushing goalkeeper.

The forward completed his hat trick and wrapped up an emphatic result with virtually the last kick of the game. Wanderers won back possession high up the pitch and when the ball was fizzed to Bryan, he turned and smashed a low drive into the bottom corner.

“I said to the players at the end, we are really pleased with the result,” Andy Taylor told The Bolton News. “It is always nice to win games of football.

“The most pleasing thing, for me, was the performance. I think as a group, it was a really good, strong performance. The first half was competitive.

“Second half, I think we really kicked into another gear and started moving, shifting the ball. It helps massively being on a really good surface, we were able to shift it and break through them.

“The performance was really good as a group but within that - and again the most important aspect of what we do - there were some really good, strong individual performances.”

Taylor confirmed that Mendes Gomes had come through the game unscathed and said he set a "great example" for the youngsters.

“He was brilliant," the manager added. "He put a shift in for the team and bought into how we were trying to do things.

"He had a good 60 to 70 minutes, he created a couple of really good opportunities and created a goal.

“Obviously, the main thing is that he came through unscathed, which is always important when a first-team player drops down.

"It is just really good to have him involved and a great example for some of our players to look up to.”
