MORTON WFC kept themselves ten points clear of the Championship drop zone despite falling to back-to-back defeats in the Scottish third tier.

Gary Forbes' side were looking to bounce back from a disappointing defeat to the hands of Renfrew seven days' prior.

Forbes will have been disappointed not to take anything from the game (Image: Gary Bradley) But they were instead left to lick their wounds after goals either side of half time saw an in-form Stenhousemuir side come away from Parklea with all three points.

In an evenly contested opening period the visitors drew first blood midway through the first half.

With 20-minutes on the clock, Ton's lapse in concentration came back to haunt them as the Falkirk side poweedr themselves in front from a corner routine.

Molly Gidney lost her marker to ghost into the six yard box where she powered the ball beneath keeper Lauren Grant to get her side's nose in front.

And that was all that separated the sides heading into the break as Ton couldn't find a leveller, despite their best efforts.

Ton rallied after the half time interval and tried to draw themselves level against a side that sat 12 points above them heading into proceedings, but to no avail.

Stenhousemuir doubled their lead late on (Image: Gary Bradley) As Forbes' side tried to commit bodies forward late on, they got hit with a sucker punch in the closing minutes of normal time.

Second half substitute Amy MacLarty did well to evade the Morton backline and make her way into the box unattended. She finished beyond a sprawled Grant despite the efforts of Jennifer Caldwell and Laura Darroch, who tried to get back in time.

The strike meant that the Parklea side was forced to stay just ten points clear of the relegation play off places.

Ton will now get ready to go again on the road and try to pick up a valuable result against a high-flying Stirling University side which sits in third place.

They will be looking to write some wrongs following last weekend's reverse, as well as from their 5-1 defeat to Stirling back in October.
