Moyes hopes to be West Ham manager for long term

David Moyes has said he hopes to make it “impossible” for West Ham’s owners not to extend his 18 month contract as he was appointed to manage the Hammers for a second time.

The former Manchester United and Everton boss was in charge at the London Stadium between November 2017 and May 2018.

But the 56-year-old Scot was let go despite steering the club away from a relegation battle to finish in 13th place.

“This time I’m going make it so there’s no choice but to ... renew [the contract] in the future,” Moyes said as spoke to the media on Monday.

"There is clause in there which can extend it … and I'm going to make it impossible that the clause can't be implemented, that’s for sure.”

Moyes also touched on his previous exit from the club, insisting there were no hard feelings over how things unfolded.

West Ham joint chairman David Sullivan said the club wanted to move in a different direction and appoint “a high-calibre figure who will lead the club into an exciting future" when Moyes left.

That figure turned out to be former Manchester City boss, Manuel Pellegrini. However, the Chilean’s side have struggled this season, winning only twice since October.

Moyes said he was “disappointed” by the decision that saw him leave at the time but that “things were done correctly.”

He added: “I think it says a lot about the owners, they thought the job I did was good enough to give me another opportunity.”

West Ham currently sit 17th in the Premier League table, just one point above the relegation zone.

The Boxing Day defeat to a severely weakened Leicester City side marked a fourth defeat in December alone.

Moyes’ first match in charge will be the New Year’s Day fixture at home to Bournemouth.

Responding to fans who may have questioned his re-appointment, Moyes defended his record which has also included managerial spells at Real Sociedad, Sunderland and Preston North End.

“What anyone’s getting with me is a very experienced Premier League manager,” he said. “Arguably, there's only two or three who have got more experience than me.

“I win. I'm coming here to get West Ham initially wins and get them away from the bottom three.”

“But my bigger picture is to have a strong team. A really good footballing team, attacking team. All those things I hope to bring to the table, and I have to do so.
