How much Aston Villa will bank from Champions League as total prize money so far revealed
Aston Villa's chances of finishing in the top eight of the Champions League league phase table were boosted last night after several results went their way.
Brest and Bayern Munich both had the opportunity to climb above Unai Emery's side in the table, but lost their matches against Shakhtar and Feyenoord respectively. In particular, Bayern's shock 3-0 defeat at De Kuip now gives Villa a chance to squeeze in the top eight when they play Celtic at Villa Park next Wednesday.
That's because a draw for Bayern would have been enough to go ahead of Villa before they face Slovan at home, while Brest have the unenviable task of hosting Real Madrid. Sporting also missed the chance to be in contention for a top-eight finish in the final matchweek after they lost at RB Leipzig.

If Villa beat Celtic and Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Atalanta or Bayer Leverkusen slip up, then Emery's side have a strong chance of making the cut for automatic last 16 qualification. Here's how much Villa have earned and could still earn in the competition...
Champions League prize money
Winner : £21m
Runner-up : £15.6m
Semi-finalists : £12.6m
Quarter-finalists : £10.5m
Round of 16 : £9.3m
Reaching knockout round play-off : £843k
League-phase wins : £1.77m
League-phase draws : £590k
How much have Villa banked so far?
Taking the above numbers into account, Villa have already made a sizeable sum from this year's new-look competition. They pocketed £15.7million just by qualifying and then topped up their prize pot with performance-related bonuses. Wins over Young Boys, Bayern, Bologna and RB Leipzig swelled the coffers by £6.8m, plus a draw against Juventus earned £590k, making a total of £7.39m.
Young Boys 0-3 Villa (£1.77m)
Villa 1-0 Bayern (£1.77m)
Villa 2-0 Bologna (£1.77m)
Club Brugge 1-0 Villa (£0m)
Villa 0-0 Juventus (£590k)
RB Leipzig 2-3 Villa (£1.77m)
Monaco 1-0 Villa (£0)
Total: £7.39m
So, as things stand, Villa are guaranteed at least £23.09m, but that final number will soar as it doesn’t take into account ticket sales - or progression into the knockouts.
How much is reaching knockouts worth?
Villa would be handed £843k just for reaching the play-offs, but last 16 qualification is their goal. That's worth a whopping £9.3m. Villa would also be due another chunky sum from UEFA depending on their final position, which will be settled next Wednesday.
Each position in the table is worth £232k, meaning the club that finishes 36th will earn that figure with an additional £232k added for every higher ranking after all eight matches.
If Villa finish in eighth, they'll bank around £6.8m, whereas a ninth-placed finish would secure them £6.51m.
