How much Celtic will bank from Champions League play offs as total prize money so far revealed
Celtic have booked their place in the Champions League knockout play off after getting the job done against Young Boys.
The Hoops secured the three points they desperately wanted against the struggling Swiss champs to clinch their spot in the top 24 of the revamped league format. And the victory also keeps alive their slender hopes of parachuting straight into the last 16 ahead of next week's mouthwatering Battle of Britain at Aston Villa - with a top-eight finish not entirely out of the question.
It marks another major milestone for all-conquering boss Brendan Rodgers too, who had never progressed beyond the group stages in either of his two spells at Parkhead. The Northern Irishman made it his mission to revive Celtic's European fortunes after a decade of mediocrity in continental competition, and Rodgers has fulfilled his promise this season - with his only blip that 7-1 hammering at Borussia Dortmund.
Having twice shattered their transfer record in the summer, Celtic's impressive Euro run could add even more funds to next term's kitty as the Scottish champions look to make the next step against the elite. The cash-rich Glasgow giants have already banked a significant windfall from their European journey so far, but another eye-watering jackpot could be on the way. Here, Record Sport has crunched the numbers so you don't have to.
Champions League prize money
Winner: £21m
Runner-up: £15.6m
Semi-finalists: £12.6m
Quarter-finalists: £10.5m
Round of 16: £9.3m
Reaching knockout round play-off: £843k
League-phase wins: £1.77m
League-phase draws: £590k
How much have Celtic banked so far?
Taking the above numbers into account, Celts have already made a fortune from this year's new-look competition. The Hoops pocketed £15.7million just from qualifying and topped up their prize money with performance-related bonuses. Wins over Slovan Bratislava, RB Leipzig and Young Boys swelled the coffers by a cool £5.31m, plus draws against Atalanta, Dinamo Zagreb and Club Brugge added another £1.77m to the pot - a total of £7.08m.
Celtic 5-1 Slovan Bratislava (£1.77m)
Borussia Dortmund 7-1 Celtic (£0)
Atalanta 0-0 Celtic (£590k)
Celtic 3-1 RB Leipzig (£1.77m)
Celtic 1-1 Club Brugge (£590k)
Dinamo Zagreb 0-0 Celtic (£590k)
Celtic 1-0 Young Boys (£1.77m)
Total: £7.08m
So, as things stand, the Scottish champions are guaranteed at least £22.78m, but that final number will soar as it doesn't take into account ticket sales - or progression into the knockouts.
How much is the Champions League playoffs worth?
Celtic will be handed a tidy £843k just for reaching the playoffs. But should they progress further and reach the last 16, it would see them rake in a whopping £9.3m.
The Treble-chasers will also be due another chunky sum from UEFA depending on their final position, which will be settled at Villa Park on Wednesday January 29. Each position in the table is worth £232k, meaning the club that finishes 36th will earn that figure with an additional £232k added for every higher ranking after all eight matches.
As Rodgers' men will at least finish somewhere between 9th and 24th, the additional bonus will range from £3m and £6.51m.
