Chelsea have once again been out splashing the cash with a world-record signing revealed to fans at Stamford Bridge at the weekend.

Since arriving in London, Naomi Girma has spoken about how she's been settling in at Cobham after joining the Blues from San Diego Wave last week - breaking the women's transfer record, making her the most expensive women's player in the world.

The fee is reported to be around £900,000 breaking the landmark barrier in the women's game. The defender is already in training putting in the hours on the grass and in the gym as she looks to get back to full fitness and hit the ground running after her season in the States finished in early November.

In a statement from the club, Girma said: "Everyone has been so friendly and so welcoming which has been great. It's just nice to finally be here.

"It has been fun. The other players are just catching me up on where little things are and what I need to do. I'm grateful for that. It feels like I've been waiting to get here, so now it feels great to finally be in."

"I'm feeling good, I'm working towards being fully fit, but the team here have been great and making sure they have a plan for me to get back quickly but safely, too."

Girma was born in San Jose, California in 2000, the daughter of two Ethiopian migrants and quickly became football-obsessed. When she was young she played for Maleda Soccer Club, a local club formed by her father before playing for her local community club until she was 17.

During this time she was also picked up by the US Olympic Development Program and was called into the national system early, playing for the U.S under-14 national team camp.

The 24-year-old US international previously played college soccer for the Stanford Cardinals, which she captained to the 2019 national championship - making the move to London her first time playing outside the U.S.

During their title-winning year, Stanford lost only one non-conference game as they soared to their fifth consecutive championship and despite Girma leading the back line, she scored in the last two games of the regular season.

In 2022 San Diego selected her as the first overall pick in the NWSL draft where she went on to be a key part of the California-based squad. In both of her first two seasons, she was named as the NWSL Rookie of the Year and the NWSL Defender of the Year - helping to lead San Diego to the NWSL Shield in 2023.

Reflecting on what it means to be a Chelsea player Girma said: “'It was amazing. The atmosphere, the fans and the game, just all of it made it a great day. It made me even more excited to be a Chelsea player.”

Although the feeling of being a Blue hasn’t quite settled in for the American who admits: “Things definitely feel more real now, just having the kit on and coming into the facility. It feels more like normal life.”

Having previously been a defensive midfielder, Girma is known for her vision of the game and composure on the ball. Being able to pick out key passes and drive on attacks from the back. Having experience as a midfielder also makes her a great reader of the game, able to anticipate attacks early and position herself in the best place.
