Liverpool knew its clash against Manchester City was one of the most anticipated game in the Premier League season and started in electric fashion at Anfield.

The Reds had several chances to open the scoring against Pep Guardiola's side, with Cody Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk going close. City struggled to get out of their own half or assert any authority on the game, managing just one shot before the break.

Gakpo eventually opened the scoring for the home side as he turned in a fine cross from Mohamed Salah but there were appeals for a penalty before then.

Nathan Ake was seemingly caught on camera "admitting" to a handball incident that occurred in the penalty area just moments before. During the first-half, Ake blocked a shot from Dominik Szoboszlai and was shown by Sky Sports cameras clutching his wrist while speaking to referee Chris Kavanagh.

Co-commentator Gary Neville says: "He is saying to the referee my wrist is hurting because the ball hit it - but his hands are tucked in very tight to his body."

There was no intervention from the Video-Assistant referee (VAR) and no complaints from the men in red.

The potential penalty didn't phase Liverpool with the Reds scoring just mere seconds after the incident took place.

City fans seemed to be concerned that the Dutchman had injured himself during the block but Ake has seemed to play on without any issues.

Liverpool added a second in the closing stages from the penalty spot. City got themselves in all sorts of trouble and Salah found the net after goalkeeper Stefan Ortega felled Luis Diaz.
