NBA: Rookie Zion scores incredible dunk in first Pelicans appearance

Zion Williamson has been the name on all basketball fans’ lips after being drafted first overall by the New Orleans Pelicans.

The 19-year-old star is seen as a generational talent and one of the most highly-anticipated rookies in recent times. With all eyes on the young man, his opening pre-season run out for the Pelicans did not disappoint.

Featuring against the Atlanta Hawks, Williamson scored 16 points and finished with seven rebounds plus three assists in 28 minutes of action.

It featured an astonishing slam dunk in just the first half of the match, in which he picked up a pass at the three point line, drove past three Hawks defenders with a rapid turn of pace, and finished in devastating style.

And, speaking after the match, the former Duke University player talked media through his stunning moment.

"I saw the lane open up,” he said. “This isn't high school or college anymore, you gotta go up strong, so I went up strong and was able to finish.

"I don't think dunking would have just gotten me here.

"Had to be like somewhat of a good basketball player to get here.”
