Kasey McAteer is on course to return to the Leicester City squad this weekend but Ruud van Nistelrooy is set to be missing five players.

McAteer has been absent for the past four games, having started each of the new manager’s first three fixtures in charge. But the winger is in training and is likely to be available when City take on QPR in the FA Cup on Saturday.

But there is less positive news elsewhere. Jannik Vestergaard is a doubt after he hobbled out of the loss to Aston Villa, while there is still no update to report on a potential return date for number one Mads Hermansen as he battles to fully overcome a groin concern.

Plus, Wilfred Ndidi is still in individual training as he recovers from a hamstring injury picked up in the 2-2 draw with Brighton. He’s not expected back in team training for at least another fortnight.

“On Mads, there’s no update,” van Nistelrooy said at his press conference on Thursday. “He’ll be out for a bit longer. He’s still in that process. That won’t change over the coming weeks.

“Jannik has been assessed and he’s made his steps after he had to come off. We’re looking to get him on the pitch today or tomorrow and get him ready for QPR, but it’s doubtful.

“There’s no new injuries. Kasey McAteer is back in full team training and if he can continue that today and tomorrow, he could be available for the game.

“(Ndidi) is continuing his individual training. He’s not yet with the team. He’s pushing harder on an individual basis. Hopefully we can welcome him to team training in the coming weeks but it’s not a matter that he will be part of it in the coming games.”

As well as Hermansen, Vestergaard and Ndidi, City have Ricardo Pereira (hamstring) and Abdul Fatawu (knee) as long-term absentees. Ricardo is due back in March, while Fatawu is out for the season.
