Former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic could be set for a reunion with his former club having been linked with a mid-season transfer to Premier League strugglers Ipswich Town.

The 36-year-old defensive midfielder left United in the summer of 2022 after making 189 appearances for the Reds. He initially moved to AS Roma but that move only covered the span of year before Stade Rennais picked him up in the summer of 2023.

He would last even less time at Stade Rennais as he helped them in both Ligue 1 and the Europa League. His form earned him a switch to Lyon but the Serbian's time there could soon be coming to an end too.

According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, the Tractor Boys are weighing up a swoop for Matic - to add a further option to their defensive midfield. Ipswich head coach Kieran McKenna will hope his existing relationship with the former Chelsea man can help to seal a deal in January.

The pair worked together at Old Trafford when McKenna was an assistant manager, originally for Jose Mourinho, before then becoming Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's right-hand man. Ipswich are not alone in their interest of Matic with Serie A trio Como, Napoli and Fiorentina also monitoring the midfielder's transfer situation carefully.

Should he make the switch to Portman Road, there is a good chance that he will be faced with a United reunion. On Wednesday, February 26 (8pm), the Reds will play host to Ipswich in the Premier League.

The two teams have already met once in the Premier League this season - in Amorim's first game in charge of the club. United drew the game 1-1 after Marcus Rashford's early goal was cancelled out by Omari Hutchinson.
