Netherlands vs England LIVE! Euro 2024 semi-final result, match stream, latest reaction and updates today
Netherlands vs England - LIVE!
Ollie Watkins struck in the 90th minute to send England into the Euro 2024 final with a dramatic 2-1 win over the Netherlands. The Three Lions, as in their previous two knockout matches at the tournament, fell behind, as Xavi Simons scored a stunning opener inside seven minutes.
But England responded with arguably their best 45-minute display of the summer, even if they equalised in fairly controversial circumstances. Harry Kane was perhaps fortunate to win a penalty, after Denzel Dumfries attempted to close down his shot, but the England captain stepped up to dispatch the spot-kick. A cagey second-half followed, one that seemed destined to be followed by another 30 minutes, until Watkins gathered Cole Palmer’s pass and from the tightest of angles fired a brilliant finish into the far corner.
No English men's team has made it to a major final on foreign soil before and now they have the chance to become European champions for the first time, when they face Spain in Sunday’s final.

Southgate: Making Euro 2024 final my best achievement
07:23 , George Flood
Gareth Southgate has now reached back-to-back European Championship finals with England, whom he has guided to the at least the last four in three of his four major tournaments at the helm.
It has been an absolutely incredible eight-year reign so far, but he ranks last night’s achievement as his greatest at the Three Lions helm.
“I think it has to be the best, it's another landmark, but we played well through the game,” Southgate said.
“It was a complicated game.
“They kept changing, we had to keep changing how we were defensively especially but I thought we caused problems all night and the end is so special for the squad.
“It's an example of what this squad are giving to the cause.”

The Yellow Wall turned Oranje; England’s road to Berlin paved with gold.
On a famous night here in Dortmund, Gareth Southgate’s side conquered the Netherlands and broke new ground, the first men’s team in the nation’s history to reach back-to-back major tournament finals, the first to reach even one overseas.
The hero was as unlikely as they might have come in Ollie Watkins, seemingly the third-choice centre-forward at the start of the evening, but the man whose stunning turn and finish in the final minute of the 90 sealed a 2-1 win.
Thrown front-and-centre of the celebrations, Watkins smiled and bounced in disbelief, a moment in England folklore drawn from what might have been this tournament’s most thankless lot, as understudy to Harry Kane, and not the only one at that.
Joy for Southgate!

Koeman and Van Dijk slam penalty decision
Wednesday 10 July 2024 23:12 , Matt Verri
Fair to say the Dutch camp are not thrilled with the decision to award Harry Kane a penalty.
“Such VAR decisions destroy football,” Koeman has said.
Virgil van Dijk, who was booked in the second-half for dissent after the referee failed to award the Netherlands a corner, also took aim at Zwayer, suggesting that the official did not want to face the players after the match.
“The referee ran back inside straight after the full-time whistle, that says a lot,” Van Dijk said.
Koeman: England have chance in final
Wednesday 10 July 2024 22:55 , Matt Verri
Ronald Koeman was asked in his post-match press conference whether he thinks England can have realistic hope of beating Spain in Sunday’s final.
"I think England showed great football in the first half after 1-0 down,” the Dutch boss said.
“It is football and maybe if you watch all the matches of them the Spanish national team is more offensive with wingers and great football from the back, great ball possession and you need to stop that.
“But England is in the final and they have these possibilities to win it maybe, from the outside Spain are playing on a high level but England can stop them, why not?"

Kane delivers verdict on penalty decision
Wednesday 10 July 2024 22:27 , Matt Verri
Harry Kane has England deserved their controversial penalty in the first-half.
Kane got a shot away in the box and was then caught by Dumfries, though the referee waved away the appeals as the striker rolled around in pain. A VAR review led to the referee consulting the pitchside monitor, and he returned to point to the spot.
The England captain swiftly recovered to step up and take the penalty himself, finding the bottom corner despite Bart Verbruggen guessing correctly, and he was asked for his view on the decision after the match.
"My foot's hanging off so he definitely caught me,” Kane said.
“Sometimes you get them sometimes you don't. I was happy to step up and see that go in the back of he net. It was a nice feeling for sure."
Ian Wright suggested the officials were correct to award a penalty, believing the challenge from Dumfries was “reckless”, but fellow pundit Gary Neville slammed the decision.
“As a defender, I think it's an absolutely disgraceful decision,” the ITV pundit said.

England ratings
Wednesday 10 July 2024 22:10
Kobbie Mainoo 8
Drove forward with the ball and snapped into tackles in another enormously impressive display. Slipped in Foden for an effort which was cleared off the line.
Bukayo Saka 8
Electric from the right flank again in the first half, bursting inside repeatedly, including in the build-up to England winning the penalty. Unlucky to have a goal disallowed for a tight offside after the break.
Jude Bellingham 7
Relished the space afforded him by the Dutch set-up and was full of swagger on the ball in the early stages. But faded and looked increasingly leggy as the game went on.

88 mins: England’s turn to push.

Van Dijk makes his views on that decision clear, and is duly booked.

86 mins: It’s all of a sudden opening up. This is disastrous for the nerves.

Free-kick in a dangerous position...

84 mins: England opened up down their right, orange shirts flooding forward.
Ball towards Weghorst in the box, Guehi slips but still recovers in time to get his body in the way. It bobbles into the safety of Pickford’s hands.
That was superb defending, absolutely crucial.
Netherlands 1-1 England
Wednesday 10 July 2024 21:42 , Matt Verri
82 mins: Bellingham dropping really deep to get on the ball.
Near enough another centre-back at the moment. He’s been one of the quieter players on the pitch for England, but he has stayed on ahead of Kane and Foden.

England look tired, which is hardly surprising after two 120 minute slogs.
The Dutch look far more likely to win this in the 90. Southgate is calling for Palamer (expected) and Watkins (surprising) from the bench.
Netherlands 1-1 England
Wednesday 10 July 2024 21:37 , Matt Verri
78 mins: Guehi wins the header against Weghorst in the box, drops for Simons and he doesn’t catch the volley at all.
Scuffed into the ground, bounces straight into Pickford’s arms.
Netherlands 1-1 England
Wednesday 10 July 2024 21:36 , Matt Verri
77 mins: England... can’t get out. This is a familiar feeling.
We had 45 minutes of fun earlier tonight, but it’s back to what we’ve become used to. England deep, letting the opposition dominate the ball.
Subs please, Gareth.
Netherlands 1-1 England
Wednesday 10 July 2024 21:34
74 mins: Brilliant from Walker, slides in and if he doesn’t get it right, Gakpo is clean through on goal. Or it might even be a red card.
Instead, he takes man and ball and England survive that scare.
Netherlands 1-1 England
Wednesday 10 July 2024 21:32 , Matt Verri
73 mins: Gakpo now too keen as he closes down Mainoo, brings down the England man.
This has been a really scrappy half. And you could replace scrappy with bang average.
Netherlands 1-1 England
Wednesday 10 July 2024 21:31 , Matt Verri
72 mins: Bellingham has been very quiet, particularly since the break, and he tries to get himself involved with a big challenge in midfield.
Slightly late as he slides in, and that’s a yellow card for the England midfielder.

After a composed start, England have lost a bit of impetus against a compact Dutch side and thoughts inevitably turn to the bench.
Cole Palmer seems the obvious pick as first sub but Anthony Gordon and Trent Alexander-Arnold are among the players doing a vigorous warm-up.
Netherlands 1-1 England
Wednesday 10 July 2024 21:29 , Matt Verri
69 mins: Ake heads straight at Pickford, but the whistle had already gone.
There was a big old wrestling match going on between Weghorst and Rice. The Dutch striker near enough had Rice in a choke hold.
Netherlands 1-1 England
Wednesday 10 July 2024 21:28 , Matt Verri
68 mins: Pressure is starting to build on England.
Another cross is swung in, Gakpo finding space to whip it in. Weghorst and Dumfries there at the back post, Pickford flicks it away for a corner.
Netherlands 1-1 England
Wednesday 10 July 2024 21:25 , Matt Verri
65 mins: Corner to the near post, Dumfries gets up well but he can’t keep the header down.
England not looking particularly secure from set pieces, the Netherlands have had a few chances from them.
Netherlands 1-1 England
Wednesday 10 July 2024 21:24 , Matt Verri
64 mins: Free-kick for the Dutch, about 45 yards out on the right wing. Up come the defenders.
Veerman swings it in... great save from Pickford!
It dropped in the box, Van Dijk shinned it towards goal and the goalkeeper reacts. Corner.

This is now a different challenge for England against a Dutch side who are sitting in and shutting out space between the lines.
Southgate warned pre-match that Koeman could be adaptable and now England must try to break through while being wary of the counter-punch.
Netherlands 1-1 England
Wednesday 10 July 2024 21:20 , Matt Verri
61 mins: Gakpo turns Rice about four times, as he drives inside off the left wing.
Plays it out to Dumfries, and Gakpo and Weghorst both want the first-time cross. Dumfries instead plays it back, and Gakpo is still throwing his hands up in disgust when the cross eventually sails straight over his head.
Netherlands 1-1 England
Wednesday 10 July 2024 21:19 , Matt Verri
59 mins: Kane loses the ball to Veerman, then throws himself to the ground and appeals for the free-kick.
Think he’s pushing his luck after that penalty in the first-half.
Netherlands 1-1 England
Wednesday 10 July 2024 21:17 , Matt Verri
57 mins: It’s all very cagey.
Neither side taking many risks on the ball, and you’d imagine it’s only going to get nervier as we move through the next 30 minutes.
And maybe beyond...

Definitely a more cautious approach from the Dutch without the ball in this second-half.
They were leaving three forwards high at times in the first-half in the hope of pinning England's wing-backs.
Now it's just Weghorst and the rest are getting in behind the ball.
It's testament to England's first-half performance but now they have to try and break down the kind of defence they've struggled against.
Netherlands 1-1 England
Wednesday 10 July 2024 21:13 , Matt Verri
54 mins: Chance for the Netherlands to break, advantage played as Rice tries to drag Reijnders back.
Simons’ progress is halted by Mainoo, before the Dutch goalscorer and Dumfries then both leave the ball for each other. Rolls out.
Rice has done well to avoid a booking for his earlier attempts to halt that counter.

Given Shaw actually played left centre-half against the Swiss, this is the first time in five-and-a-half games at Euro 2024 that England have had an actual left-back on the pitch.
Netherlands 1-1 England
Wednesday 10 July 2024 21:11 , Matt Verri
52 mins: Stones briefly looks in trouble, bouncing ball and he’s isolated as Reijnders and Weghorst close him down.
Calm as ever, though. Skips away from the orange shirts, even as he has his heels clipped.
Netherlands 1-1 England
Wednesday 10 July 2024 21:08 , Matt Verri
49 mins: Long throw, Saka gets in behind Ake and to the byline.

Is that decisive, foot-on-throat Gareth Southgate I see?
A big call if there are still any reservations over Shaw's fitness, given he's probably going to end up playing almost a full 90 minutes (with stoppage time) if this goes all the way to penalties.
Back underway!

Second-half is up and running.
Changes from both at the break. Shaw is on for England, replacing Trippier. That feels like a really good change.

And that’s half-time.
Has to be England’s best 45 minutes of the tournament, even if that is an incredibly low bar.
Simons’ stunner gave the Dutch the lead, but Kane’s penalty levelled it up and they have been well on top since.
Level at the break.

45+2 mins: Dutch keeping the ball as we tick towards half-time.
Dumfries tries to inject a bit of pace into things, but he runs straight at Trippier.
On the other flank, Ake keeps the ball in under pressure from Walker. The defender is then in the box as the ball comes in, but Ake flicks it out for a goal-kick.

If Dumfries was unlucky with the penalty, has he gotten away with one there?

It's a soft penalty but if you catch a player after playing a pass in the middle of the park, it's usually a foul.

And the referee is over to look at the monitor! This would be outrageously harsh.
Netherlands 1-0 England

14 mins: Saka inside, further inside, further inside... shot blocked in the box.
Falls for Kane, he smashes a shot just over the bar. Got caught by Dumfries in the process, and the England captain rolls around looking for a penalty.
Referee couldn’t care less.

Well, we saw an early goal set last night's semi-final alight.
Spain came from behind to reach Berlin in that one - now England will have to do the same. Good job they've had a bit of practice, really...
Netherlands 1-0 England

13 mins: Another Dutch foul, another England free-kick.
It’s swung to the back post this time, Rice is free at the back post but his volley back into the middle isn’t a great one.
Good response from falling behind, though, from England. Kane now tries his luck from 30 yards out, comfortable save.
Netherlands 1-0 England

11 mins: Bellingham needs a bit of treatment, after taking a blow to his head. He’ll be fine to continue and England have a free-kick in a good position.
Trippier and Foden standing over it. It’s Foden, decent ball in but headed clear.

It's screamer from Xavi Simons and another brilliant goal to illuminate the semi-finals after Lamine Yamal's strike last night.
But it's a bad moment for Declan Rice, who was pickpocketed by the PSV midfielder 30 yards from goal.
GOAL! Netherlands 1-0 England | Xavi Simons 7'

Stunning from Simons!
Worst possible start for England. Rice caught on the ball, and Simons can drive at the defence.
He lets fly from 20 yards, and it’s a sensational strike. Flies into the top corner, Pickford no chance.
Netherlands 0-0 England

6 mins: Saka wins it back off Gakpo and leads the counter, playing a one-two with Kane who gets clattered in the process.
Arsenal man drifts inside, all the way to the opposite flank but there’s nobody there to support him. Has to turn back.

Who has 2:45 on the clock when the first divot was taken out of the pitch?
In fairness, they've had a fair bit of weather to deal with at this ground over the last few weeks.
Netherlands 0-0 England
Wednesday 10 July 2024 20:04 , Matt Verri
4 mins: First dangerous moment in attack, England are alarmingly open. Trippier nowhere to be seen, which is a bit strange as he wasn’t particularly noticeable in attack either.
Malen makes the run through the middle, pass is slightly behind him and England scramble clear.

England are in a back-five out of possession, with Kyle Walker tucking in and Bukayo Saka moving to the right side of defence.
It's more fluid when England have the ball, allowing Saka to push high. Another big job for the Arsenal winger this evening.
Netherlands 0-0 England

2 mins: Netherlands immediately trying to go long down the channels, offside flag gets England out of trouble.
Bellingham then caught on the ball by Simons - Dutch have made the sharper start.
KICK-OFF!

What an atmosphere. The smoke from the canons is just hanging in the air adding to it all.
Brilliant colours, brilliant noise. Proper football match.
Here we go!

Teams are out, UEFA music blaring out.
Thankfully that finally stops - time for the anthems.
Dutch fans are ready...

Southgate explains Guehi decision
Wednesday 10 July 2024 19:50 , Matt Verri
As we’ve covered, just the one change for England tonight. Marc Guehi returns from suspension and he’s straight back in to replace Ezri Konsa.
The Aston Villa man was impressive against Switzerland, but Guehi shone in the opening matches of the tournament and the England boss has kept faith in him.
“He'd been so good,” Southgate has said pre-match.
"It wasn't an easy call but we didn't feel Marc deserved to be left out after his start to the tournament."

A decent chorus of boos as referee Felix Zwayer's name is read out.
Weirdly, it didn't seem to come from the main England end, which is halfway through a burst of Don't Take Me Home.
Pre-match thoughts from Ronald Koeman
Wednesday 10 July 2024 19:41 , Matt Verri
We’ve heard from the England camp - time to take a look at what Koeman has to say about things.
His side finished third in their group, but edged through and, after wins over Romania and Turkey, find themselves in the last-four.
🗣️ "It's important we have good possession, to have the right players between the lines... We need the perfect game."

The Yellow Wall -- the name for the iconic single-tier stand here at Borussia Dortmund's home -- will be transformed into the Orange Wall tonight.
The Dutch fans, who look set to outnumber their England counterparts, are filling that end, in front of where their players are now warming up.
There are no surprises in Gareth Southgate's XI -- Marc Guehi always seemed likely to return and Luke Shaw can expect to come off the bench again -- but the question is whether the England manager sticks with the back-three in possession he used against Switzerland.
The Dutch will line up in their usual 4-3-3 system, with head coach Ronald Koeman resisting the temptation to include battering ram Wout Weghorst in the starting XI.
The striker remains their go-to Plan B on the bench.
"Thousands and thousands more Dutch fans"

England supporters will do well to make themselves heard tonight...
