Netherlands vs Turkey LIVE!

An own goal by Mert Muldur completed a Netherlands comeback as they beat Turkey 2-1 on Saturday to book a Euro 2024 semi-final meeting with England in Dortmund.

Turkey took the lead in the 35th minute after the Dutch failed to clear a corner, leaving Arda Guler to cross perfectly to the back post with his right foot for defender Samet Akaydin to head home.

Guler went close to adding a second early in the second half when he hit the post with a free-kick, and it was to prove a costly miss when Dutch defender Stefan de Vrij equalised with a powerful header in the 70th minute.

That goal gave the Netherlands the lift they needed, Muldur turning the ball into his own net under pressure from Cody Gakpo and the Dutch hung on despite a number of late opportunities for Turkey.

A truly excellent performance from Turkey on the pitch in all but one of their games, they leave with their heads held high and surely capable of making the next World Cup.

Arda Guler is a player we will be hearing a lot about in the coming years but he isn’t the only talented youngster amongst their ranks.

Why is Merih Demiral suspended?

19:52 , Marc Mayo

Turkey defender Merih Demiral will miss today’s Euro 2024 quarter-final tie against the Netherlands after he was hit with a two-game ban for his goal celebration in Tuesday’s win over Austria.

Demiral scored both goals in the 2-1 last-16 victory in Leipzig and celebrated the second of those by mimicking the shape of a wolf’s head with his fingers, a gesture linked with the Turkish far-right ultra-nationalist group known as the Grey Wolves.

The celebration prompted a huge backlash and was condemned by Germany’s interior minister, Nancy Faeser.

“The symbols of Turkey’s far-right extremists do not belong in our stadiums,” said Faeser.

UEFA have now concluded their investigation into Demiral’s celebration and he has been handed a two-game ban. European football’s governing body have, in total, hit the defender with four charges that has led to him being given such a suspension.

The charges relate to: failing to comply with the general principles of conduct, for violating the basic rules of decent conduct, for using sports events for manifestations of a non-sporting nature and for bringing the sport of football into disrepute.

Netherlands out to build on big win

19:50 , Marc Mayo

Netherlands' comprehensive win over Romania in their last match at the European Championship has given them a large dollop of confidence ahead of their quarter-final tie against Turkey on Saturday, coach Ronald Koeman said on the eve of the clash.

“It shouldn’t be that we need a defeat to spark a good performance and come out of our shell,” said Koeman.

“But we created a lot of chances and showed a lot of speed up front. It was a good game even if the opponent gave us a lot of room.

“This is a different opponent with different qualities. They have played with four at the back, but also with five. Just like the Romanians, they showed a lot of heart in how they play. But we are more worried about ourselves.

“We are playing in Berlin for a semi-final, a great opportunity to progress even further in the tournament. But we're not just going to romp to a win, that certainly won’t be the case. It's going to be a very difficult game.

“We’ve just got to be patient with the ball and keep possession. The Turks are very enthusiastic and good on the ball. They have also seen us against Romania and will probably look to have our measure.”

How Turkey got here

19:46 , Marc Mayo

One of the games of the tournament saw Turkey kick off with a 3-1 win over Georgia before they suffered an embarrassing 3-0 defeat to Portugal.

Needing only a point to qualify out of Group F, they held on in a thrilling encounter with Czech Republic before Cenk Tosun won it for them at the death.

In the last-16, they fought off a much-fancied Austria team to win 2-1 courtesy of a double by Merih Demiral and Merk Gunok’s incredible late save.

How the Dutch got here

19:43 , Marc Mayo

Netherlands did not look great during the group stages.

Wout Weghorst came off the bench to score a late comeback winner against Poland in their opening game before a controversial VAR call denied them a similar victory over France.

They qualified in third place with a 3-2 defeat to Austria but bounced back by putting three goals past an average Romania team in the last-16.

The question is whether they are a flat-track bully or the real deal when the going gets tough…

Turkish ambassador makes cheeky request

19:33 , Marc Mayo

Turkey's ambassador to Austria, Ozan Ceyhan, said he hoped fans would show moderation in their celebrations when - not if - they beat Netherlands tonight.

Turkey beat Austria in a thrilling last-16 tie in Leipzig on Tuesday, setting them up for a huge game in the German capital, which is home to an estimated 250,000 Turkish expatriates and their descendents.

"When we win the match against the Netherlands, I believe that maybe we won't need to bother our Austrian neighbours and friends with horns, unnecessary noise and ruckus. We can celebrate more quietly and calmly," Ceyhan told representatives of Turkish media in Vienna on Friday.

"I have not the slightest doubt that you, my fellow citizens, all Austrians of Turkish origin, will be moderate.

"Our Austrian friends beat the Netherlands [but] we also won the match we played with our Austrian friends. Now that we are playing against the Netherlands, I ask why shouldn't we win 3-2?"

Ronald Koeman sends Oranje warning

19:25 , Marc Mayo

Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman says his side cannot afford to let their performance level drop as they eye a place in the semi-final.

After losing their final group game to Austria, Netherlands upped the ante in the last 16 against Romania and Koeman knows his side will have to match that level against Turkey.

"We started the tournament really well with a win against Poland and a draw against France," he said in his pre-match press conference. "We had a bad day against Austria.

"The last one was a really good level football wise and if we keep that level then it can be a really good tournament for us. But every match is difficult. All the big teams have struggled a little bit in different matches to win it.

"Even England scored in the last second, Portugal won by penalties. You have to fight for it, but the last one gave us a lot of confidence. We understand we need to keep that level.

"If we go down we won't reach what we would like to win."

Turkish fury at Merih Demiral ban

19:20 , Marc Mayo

Turkey Football Federation president Mehmet Buyukeksi has called Merih Demiral's two-match ban "unlawful" and a "political decision".

Demiral is suspended for Turkey's Euro 2024 quarter-final against Netherlands after being sanctioned over a wolf salute he made towards the crowd during the last-16 match with Austria in Leipzig on Tuesday.

The salute is recognised as being linked to the far-right movement in Turkey but some dispute this and the punishment has not been well received, with Buyukeksi saying: "It will never be acceptable. We consider the two-match penalty given to our player Merih Demiral by the UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Committee as an unacceptable, unlawful and political decision.

"The sign our player made during the goal celebration is not a political sign in any way, it is a sign that has been used by Turks for centuries and symbolises Turkishness.

"This penalty is never acceptable in this great organisation where our national team made history by eliminating Austria in the last-16 rounds of the 2024 European Championship and reaching the quarter-finals.

"Since the way to appeal and appeal to CAS is closed for suspensions of less than three matches, our right to appeal has been taken away from us with the two-match penalty. This biased and unfair decision has deeply disappointed our entire nation. Only the Turkish National Team is against all these injustices.

"We stand up not as an individual, but as a nation. I am sure that this unfair decision will encourage our passionate fans in Berlin, which we see as our second home, to stand behind our team, as they have done so far, stronger than ever, being careful against malicious provocations."

Dutch defender Daley Blind has warned his team-mates that the Euro 2024 showdown with Turkey will feel like “an away match”.

Turkey have lived up to their billing of dark horses to get this far and they have been backed by huge support. Around three million people of Turkish descent live in Germany, and it has led to their supporters dominating whatever stadium the team play in.

Turkey 'pride' won't suffer from UEFA saga

18:29 , Marc Mayo

Turkey's pride will not be dented by the suspension handed to defender Merih Demiral for a political gesture when they continue their Euro 2024 campaign, coach Vincenzo Montella has said.

UEFA announced on Friday that the 26-year-old centre back, who celebrated a goal against Austria by making a "wolf" gesture with his fingers, would be suspended for two games. The gesture made by Demiral is linked to the "Grey Wolves", an ultra-nationalist youth branch of Turkey's Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), which is an ally of President Tayyip Erdogan's ruling AK Party.

"We consider it unfair, this ban, because it was not a political gesture - it was interpreted as such, but it was just something that was not properly understood," Montella told reporters.

"But this will not put a break on Turkish pride. Actually, we will be more passionate, more proud. We want to make the country proud, and I'm sure we will all be highly motivated, and this goes for the fans as well."

Score prediction

17:43 , Marc Mayo

It’s been a little hard to get a read on the Netherlands at this tournament so far.

Dominant but wasteful against Poland, they needed Wout Weghorst to rescue a late victory off the bench before they looked flat in a goalless heavyweight draw with France but could have won again were Xavi Simons’ second-half goal not controversially ruled out.

Then their defensive frailties were fully exposed by Austria in a five-goal thriller, before they got a real confidence boost with a comfortable victory over an albeit middling Romania side.

It’s hard to know whether you can truly count them on the list of contenders, though in this half of the draw no one can be ruled out from making the final.

Turkey have been inconsistent too but shown real flashes of exciting quality led by talismanic youngster Arda Guler, outdueling debutants Georgia in a classic before being brushed aside by Portugal and leaving it very late to make their numerical advantage count against the Czech Republic, ahead of benefiting from a chaotic start against an out-of-sorts Austria.

We’re expecting a really entertaining affair here with plenty of action and incident, shaded by the Netherlands with Liverpool’s Gakpo no doubt enjoying a starring role once again.

Netherlands to win, 2-1.

Our prediction for the Turkey team

17:33 , Marc Mayo

Predicted Turkey XI: Gunok; Muldur, Akaydin, Bardakci, Kadioglu; Ozcan, Ayhan; Guler, Calhanoglu, Yildiz; Yilmaz

Early Turkey team news

17:26 , Marc Mayo

Turkey will welcome back influential captain Hakan Calhanoglu and defender Samet Akaydin against the Dutch after both players served one-match bans against Austria.

No fewer than 10 players ran the risk of suspensions in that game after a thoroughly ill-tempered final group game against the Czech Republic, with midfielders Orkun Kokcu - who limped off injured late on - and Ismail Yuksek both picking up second cautions of the tournament to rule them out this weekend.

Calhanoglu will come back in at the expense of Kokcu, though a replacement will be needed for Yuksek, with Borussia Dortmund’s Salih Ozcan likely to be recalled to partner Kaan Ayhan in deeper midfield.

Vincenzo Montella is likely to field both Akaydin and Abdulkerim Bardakci as a centre-back pairing, with Demiral now handed a two-game ban by Uefa for his goal celebration against Austria.

How we expect the Dutch to line up

17:20 , Marc Mayo

Predicted Netherlands XI: Verbruggen; Dumfries, Van Dijk, De Vrij, Ake; Reijnders, Schouten; Malen, Simons, Gakpo; Depay

Early Netherlands team news

17:13 , Marc Mayo

Ronald Koeman rolled the dice with a start for Steven Bergwijn against Romania with little impact, hooking the player at half-time in favour of Donyell Malen, who went on to score twice and surely cement his starting spot.

That is likely to be the only change for the Dutch on Saturday, with no players suspended and his team otherwise looking settled with no fresh injury concerns of note.
