Liverpool face an anxious wait to discover the extent of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s injury after the right-back limped out of the win at Bournemouth. Alexander-Arnold asked to be substituted midway through the second half after dropping to the turf holding his thigh during the 2-0 Premier League triumph on Saturday afternoon.

The 26-year-old, who was replaced by Conor Bradley, will now undergo scans to ascertain the exact nature of any damage with Arne Slot hopeful the defender can avoid an extended spell on the sidelines.

But the Reds boss admits he doesn’t expect Alexander-Arnold to be available for the League Cup semi-final second leg at home to Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday, with his team trailing 1-0 from the first game last month.

“The situation is he said to me that you have to take me off and he sat on the floor and we took him off,” said Slot.

“He felt something, I can’t tell you exactly what it was and how bad it is as we are (talking now) only just after the game.

“But it’s never a good sign if a player is asking for a substitution. It’s not a fact but I would be surprised if he plays on Thursday. Let’s hope he is back with us as soon as possible.”

Liverpool are in the midst of a busy run of fixtures, with the game against Tottenham followed by an FA Cup fourth round tie at Championship side Plymouth Argyle the following Sunday before the final Goodison league derby against Everton three days later.

Slot had the rare luxury of a full-strength squad before game at Bournemouth which meant neither Joe Gomez nor Federico Chiesa made the matchday squad.
